    Congrats!!

    Thanks Peter,
Just after I sent the message, I saw a post that he'd made here today. Just me concerned about nothing. Glad to hear you're fine too. So that makes three of us. :)

By the way, I think I clicked the wrong link. I thought I was sending a PM but I don't think I have.
Pay no heed if I get overly profuse or pompous in my writing from time to time. I am an obsessive perfectionist (although I never get anywhere close to achieving it! :( ). You should not read extra meaning into my blatherings due to their length; if my writings are overly long it is merely because I lacked the skill to express my thoughts more concisely.
About the meanings of the word sport: Not a big deal, I can respect your viewpoint. btw, how is vol. 1 of your epic series progressing?
    (cont. from prev. post below...)
So then, are you now reconciled with my usage of "sport" in reference to the game of poker? If not, pray tell, why not?
    (cont. from prev. post below...)
Chess I have heard referenced as a sport many times in common usage (I used to play every day for several years). In fact, chess is explicitly recognized as a sport by the International Olympic Committee. Although I have never personally heard the game of Scrabble called a sport, I speculate it too is considered such amongst those who are serious about the game.
Despite the dictionary technically allowing music to be named a sport, I would say (continuing to maundering in the dimly-lit and ill-defined realm of subjective speculation here...) this would be poor usage. Why? Without getting into the finer points of semantics (in the interests of brevity :D , and with the expectation that you will get what I am saying without further elaboration), simply put, because music, to my way of thinking, is an art, not a sport.
    (cont. from prev. post below...)
Now, the issue of whether or not my use of "sport" entailed an extension of meaning aside, is "sport" the *best* word one might use in describing the activities you listed? This is a different question entirely. Although, ultimately, it is a subjective matter, I can agree I have never heard monopoly called a sport, and that although classifying it as a sport would be accurate according to the 5 dictionaries I consulted, if one chose to do so, imo this usage would be undesirable. In contrast, there is significant precedent for poker being referred to as a sport. Witness the colloquialism, "Poker is a gentleman's sport.". As further justification, consider that in the Wikipedia article on poker it is called a spectator sport. Granted, it is more usual to hear poker spoken of as a game, but it is certainly not unknown to hear it called a sport either.
    (cont. from previous post below...)
You said, "If "sport" includes poker, why not chess, monopoly, scrabble? Why not musical competitions (which share significant qualities with sports)? If that, might the word be extended to include all music?". Indeed, given the existence of the above definition, "sport" could accurately be applied to any of the activities you mentioned with no extension of meaning whatsoever beyond that already sanctioned by a number of widely used (and one now long defunct) dictionaries. N.B.: The above referrenced definition does not say, "An active physical pastime...", it says, "An active pastime...".
Of several dictionaries I consulted (2 online and 3 off-line) all include among their several definitions for the word "sport" one that is semantically equivalent to, "An active pastime, recreation, or diversion.". That was the definition I intended when using "sport" in reference to the game of poker. Since, to my mind, it is clear poker can be considered to be a pastime, recreation, or diversion, I do not see how using the word "sport" to describe poker can be seen as extending the meaning of the word into fresh areas, i.e. the meaning I intended for "sport" in the context that I was using it is entirely condoned by one of the definitions of "sport" in all of the 5 dictionaries I checked (one from the 19th century no less :D ).
(cont. from post below...) For now, I've given up playing and don't think I'll be getting back into it anytime soon, at least not until I've read some books on the subject. Despite my enthusiasm, however, I do agree most folks, including myself, should probably not view poker as a potential means to accrue money - it is much safer, and wiser, in all likelihood to play only for negligible amounts, or not play for money at all. btw, if you ever decide to give all your money away I would be more than glad to take it off your hands.
Thanks for wishing me a good birthday. Yes, poker can be a treacherous sport and it does enslave or even ruin the lives of some people (a very small number relative to all those who play), but it also can be great fun if pursued with an eye to moderation. It is a deep game, were wisdom, intuition, intelligence, memory, bravery, strategy, and luck are some of the important factors. If one is skilled enough, either through training or natural aptitude, considerable amounts of money can be made at this game. For a time I even managed to make a substantial amount above what I had invested, but then I got too greedy and pushed my luck too far.
Thanks for the link to VOTH on Amazon UK. That is considerably cheaper, even with shipping to the US, than anything I had found. Unfortunately my funds are not currently equal to even this reasonable price - lately I've been throwing money hand-over-fist down a bottomless pit called online poker. It is a most interesting and exhilerating game, but not one I've had much luck with. I'll be looking forward to this book sometime in the future after I get my finances back in better order.
