Re: Annihilation

The only US politics this thread is concerned with are the Southern Reach's plans for the extraterrestrial menace.

Just out of curiosity, is this thread still around? I missed it. I promise not to add a comment and resurrect it.

Re: Annihilation

All I know is that at some point Vandermeer popped in here to call this forum a toilet, for reasons still unclear to me, and just as quickly vanished. The sort of behavior that, from lesser beings, would probably get one banished.

But I don't really care about it, and I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume I missed something.

And in truth, I would prefer not to hear anyone's political opinions, if possible. Politics is poisonous mind-garbage on a level with religion with me, and it makes me impolite. If you believe the world can be changed for the better, go out there and do it, but for God's sake don't preach to me about it.

I will tolerate all digressions regarding antinatalism, however.

Re: Annihilation

Just watched the movie and found it at least in parts intriguing, but not wholly succesful. Visually interesting (I probably shouldn't have watched it on my computer, but it's not in the cinemas here), partly because of the analogue feel to the effects. The overall atmosphere was what worked best, but somehow the movie as a whole never clicked. Events in the shimmering seemed - in spite of its length - to develop too quickly. The isolation and paranoia never really got to me, and when Anya (whose name I had to look up in order to write this) has her breakdown, the build up doesn't feel sufficient for that reaction, even though a sort of explanation is given.

I'm told the plot in the novel differs somewhat from the movie, whereas the overall atmosphere comes close to the novel?

The novel has a completely different atmosphere (a far superior one), with an emphasis on isolation. The film is a hell of a lot talkier.

I didn't think the film really resembled the novel all that much apart from a few scenes. I'd sooner reread the book than rewatch the movie.

I'm not a huge Fulci fan but Black Cat was definitely my favourite.
