Re: Ex Occidente Press

While on the subject of Ex Occidente Press, could someone please tell me whether or not the Christopher Barker book Tenebrous Tales is worth getting or not and by that I'm referring specifically to the writing and not the quality and the layout of the book itself. You see, with his work being compared on the site to such luminaries as Walter de la Mare and Robert Aickman (my favourite writer), I was wondering how people here on this site rated his writing, if such comparisons with the above authors are justified or not and so on. I realise that whatever views are expressed don't automatically mean that I myself will ultimately come to agree with them but it would be nice nevertheless to get some measure of opinion on him, especially as I've never read any of his work upto press.

Re: Ex Occidente Press

Now that's a loaded question... Some might wonder whether it isn't also a tactical question, i.e. a question in bad faith. But I'm going to do you the (admittedly minor) service of acting as if it's an innocent, good faith question...

The answer is yes, Christopher Barker's book will be worth reading. There are several reasons for this, but before I give them, I'm going to wait a few days and let other people give their reasons why you shouldn't read it...

The Walter de la Mare thing is a red herring. All writers compare themselves to other, more renowned writers. I do it, you do it, we all do it. If you want to batter this Mr Barker (as many people do) don't do it with a fish. Truly.

Re: Ex Occidente Press

The publication of the Bulgakov collection (to which I am a proud contributor) and "The Man Who..." will be welcome indeed (but I will believe it when I actually see it, if then...)
The site says that there are nine books coming soon from EO and provides excerpts from six... if we add "The Master in Cafe Morphine" to the six, that still leaves two unidentified books. Has anyone heard which other books are closest to completion in Ghetu's queue? I'm personally hoping one of them is the second Jean Ray collection (not that I can afford it at the moment...)

Re: Ex Occidente Press

My latest understanding (fortunately my understanding is like a short-wave radio and can be adjusted easily enough) is that the Mark Samuels book is imminent -- meaning that it rolls off the presses in about 35 hours from now.

That book will actually appear before the Bulgakov.

Yes, Jean Ray is one of the other books on the list of nine. The Bulgakov is on a separate list, apparently, so isn't one of the nine. I don't suppose there's any harm in revealing that D.F. Lewis is also one of the nine.

I do feel obliged, however, to state that I'm not an official spokesman for Dan Ghetu or indeed for anyone: I have legs instead of wheels and therefore have no truck with spokes. I'm assuming the truck has legs too. But the above is my present understanding...

Re: Ex Occidente Press

Hopefully, Peter Bell's The Light of the World is one of the titles on the list of nine. Bell's book is no longer listed on Ex Occidente's site which gives me reason to wonder if perhaps the book has just been delayed, or perhaps is not going to be published after all.

The update on Mark Samuels' book is welcome news as I've been looking forward to seeing its publication even more than the Bulgakov. Excited to hear that the Jean Ray is on the list too.

Peter Bell's book will no longer be published by Ex Occidente. Neither will the Steve Duffy book previously announced.

If you don't mind my asking, which story did you contribute to the collection?

Re: Ex Occidente Press

My story in the Bulgakov collection is entitled "Only For The Crossed-Out". I'm Adam Cantwell, I also had a story in Cinnabar's Gnosis. Really honored to be involved with EO and all the great stuff coming out of Bucharest. Thanks to Rhys for clearing up the release schedule!
