Cinnabar's Gnosis

Now that Cinnabar's Gnosis is ready to be ordered and read, does anyone have any views on Gustav Meyrink that they would care to share? My first exposure to him was a novel called The Angel of the West Window, which I picked up off a library shelf.

Re: Cinnabar's Gnosis

I think he's at his best when describing the cities his characters move in. What has stayed with me is the atmosphere of the jewish ghetto in The Golem or the Amsterdam docks in The Green Face. Most of the theosophical speculation he was prone to tends to be forgettable.

The Angel of the West Window (his last novel) is thought to be a collaboration with a Schmid Noerr. Scholars can't agree on how much was Noerrs. To me the style seemed different to Meyrink's other novels.

I am tempted by Cinnabars Gnosis. Unfortunately I've ordered & paid for two books From Ex Occidente (April & June) but never received anything. I'll probably try to order through a UK dealer.

Re: Cinnabar's Gnosis

Thanks for that intriguing info, Bernician. I had no idea that Angel of the West Window was a collaboration. By the way you have one of the most disturbing avatars I've ever seen... :-0

About the Ex Occidente books that never appeared, why not email Dan Ghetu personally at this address and I'm sure he'll sort it out (in fact he suggested this procedure himself):

Re: Cinnabar's Gnosis

Thanks for the advice but I've tried that. Mr Ghettu politely replied to say he had sent a second copy of one of the books. But 8 weeks later I still have no books & assume the problem is with the postal service between Romania & the UK.

Further to Meyrink I recommend his short stories. Opal & Other Stories published by Dedalus is a very good selection. I think its still in print.

Re: Cinnabar's Gnosis

I love Meyrink. The Angel of the West Window is one of the few English translations I missing. Anyone have an extra copy? Unfortunately, it's out of print and has a hefty price tag right now, especially for a paperback. I look forward to reading this one though, as Meyrink's occult stories interest me the most. Meyrink' stories often include Western hermetics (Meyrink was a member of the Golden Dawn) and Eastern mysticism. Angel of the West Window deals with the Elizabethan sorcerer John Dee.

Opal & Other Stories is a great collection. Meyrinks hatred of the military (and officers in particular) comes though loud and clear in an amusing way. Though I much prefer Mike Mitchell's translation's of Meyrink over Opal's Maurice Raraty.

Like Aleister Crowley, Meyrink was really into yoga, long before it caught on in the West.

Dedalus books has a forthcoming collection titled, The Meyrink Reader.

I'm very excited about this one.

Amazon's release dates should be taken with a pinch of salt.
However, you may want to check out this link:

It says there was a reissue on the 19th of November. They don't have it in stock though.

I was not aware he was a member of the Golden Dawn. As an adult he lived in Prague, Munich, & Starnberg. Do you know where the lodge was based?

Yes, he practiced yoga every day even when very ill. He was a member of the Theosophical Society & a friend of GRS Mead. He left around about the same time as Mead (c1909) & for the same reason he was more interested in western esotericism - with the exception of yoga. Whereas the Theosophical Society was becoming increasingly orientated to the East. He eventually viewed the Society with contempt.

Shhh Rhys I've managed to get this far without any realizing I haven't actually read any Meyrink yet...

What Temple - I assume he became a member post 1900? (I've got a list of the members before the Isis-Urania revolt lying around somewhere and I don't *think* he was mentioned on that)
