"A Season In Carcosa" and "The Grimscribe's Puppets" are coming!

Joe Pulver

Grimscribe
I am proud to announce Miskatonic River Press will be releasing two anthologies I am editing. A Season In Carcosa will be similar in feel and direction to Ellen Datlow’s stunning Lovecraft Unbound, but I’ll be mining the King In Yellow work of Robert W. Chambers. The 2nd book is called, The Grimscribe’s Puppet and will feature all new tributes to weird fiction’s legendary master, Thomas Ligotti. These two books will be released in summer and fall of 2012. The list of names who have agreed to pen tales for these two books is, I feel, breathtaking. More on that as things progress.

Dani Serra will be doing the covers for both of these anthologies.

With Wilum Pugmire’s upcoming new collection and Kevin Ross’ Dead But Dreaming 2, as well as Scott Aniolowski’s new holiday-themed anthology of new Lovecraftian fiction, Horror For the Holidays, MRP steps to the fore to solidly commit itself to giving readers the finest in Lovecraftian fiction.

Editor’s note: Submissions for the 2 anthologies I’m working on are by invitation only.

Re: _A Season In Carcosa_ and _The Grimscribe's Puppets_ are coming! !!

This is great news! Definitely something to look forward to as I am of big fan of both Ligotti type stories and The King in Yellow. I have a couple of chapbooks by Rainfall Books and an anthology called Rehearsals For Oblivion that are based on TKIY. Would love to know more about how these anthologies got started. I like the art by Dani Serra, as well. And, yes, keep us posted.

We’ve had various Lovecraftian collections of this type over the decades. Some of them I love. I wanted one for RWC‘s KIY, as a reader I dreamed long of this. Datlow wasn‘t doing one, wish she had, so I decided to see if I could. I asked some people I know and they have said yes. I can’t mention names as yet, but many here know Matt Cardin’s comments regarding a new golden age of horror and some of the names he and others mention, that’s who I’m asking, writers like that.

Tom is one of the finest writers we’ve ever had, so a tribute to him was a no-brainer. And it’s high time. Again, no Datlow doing it, so he I am. Again, I’m asking the same kind of people. And Tom was very kind in giving permission to do this book. As I monster fan of his many gifts to us, this is my love letter to him.

I approached a publisher and they said yes. So it’s game on.

Behind this all is my love of what if, so it’s what if he wrote this, or what if she did something like that. I’m delighted and surprise by the talented artists who have said they will submit. I think many here will be as well.

Re: _A Season In Carcosa_ and _The Grimscribe's Puppets_ are coming! !!

This is wonderful news. I am particularly excited about the Ligottian volume, as I have yet to read any Chambers. Hopefully by the time both books are released this will have been rectified. Good luck Joe, and keep us posted about new developments please.

As the Vice President in Charge of Fiction for MRP, I am particularly THRILLED to be involved in bringing these books out. I am especially excited about The Grimscribe’s Puppets! In preparation I have been re-reading selections from Ligotti's books, and have fallen in love with his work all over again.

Oops. Didn't know I should have read his books before starting this project... Can you tell me which one I should start w/? :D :D :D

Seriously, I do want people to know I have been "very" impressed by you and MRP's comittment to these to books.

Re: _A Season In Carcosa_ and _The Grimscribe's Puppets_ are coming! !!

I am so excited about these books, Joe, and thank you for inviting me to contribute. I spent last year trying to complete my Ligotti library, and I am more wide-eyed in love with his work than ever before. Knowing that I have an entire year to try and come up with a wee 3,000/5,000 word tribute story in which I can express my admiration for Tom's fiction, I can definitely say that I hope to have a piece for THE GRIMSCRIBE'S PUPPETS. I've try'd but once to pen something "in the Ligotti tradition," a portion of "Uncommon Places" which I have posted here at TLO.

One writer I hope you have also invited into ye book is Matt Cardin. I had the profound pleasure of meeting him at MythosCon, and his reading was one of the highlights of that event for me. My reading time is wee these days, but I am slowly devouring Matt's DARK AWAKENINGS and hope soon to be able to review it at Amazon. The book is one of the finest weird fiction collections I have ever read -- absolutely brilliant!

Re: _A Season In Carcosa_ and _The Grimscribe's Puppets_ are coming! !!

Not for naught, but having read DARK AWAKENINGS as well I have to agree with Willum: it is indeed absolutely brilliant. Definitely the best collection I read last year.

I'll say! I remember you talking about wanting to do a KIY anthology (back in -- what was it, '99?) at the NecronomiCon convention in Providence, RI. Glad to hear that it's finally happening. Congrats, Joe!

Re: _A Season In Carcosa_ and _The Grimscribe's Puppets_ are coming! !!

The King in Yellow universe has always seemed to me that it lends itself very well to further exploration - nearly as much as H.P. Lovecraft's Mythos. I'm surprised there are only a handful of Carcosa inspired anthologies out there, and I'm glad that Miskatonic River Press and Joe Pulver are about to make a new contribution.

A few years ago, I wondered whether or not the KIY could become its own Mythos (The Taint of Yellow: A Mythos in the Making?), with enough time and contributions by newer writers. It looks like this is gradually coming to pass. Unlike some of the early Lovecraftian pastiches, though, it feels like the Yellow Mythos is getting off the ground in the right way, with plenty of sanity twisting, high quality stories that don't ape anyone (not even Robert W. Chambers).

I'll be eager to see where this goes. Not just because the new anthology will probably be great, but because weird fiction history is being made!

Thanks! I have long been an advocate--Hell, crusader!, of RWC and the KIY. To date I've penned 30 tales, one poem, and a short, one act play based on RWC's creation. It is my hope to one day write a text that is good enough to belong in the canon.

I hope the book I will give to you next summer is worthy of your excitement. I am thrilled w/ how it is shaping up. This book, and the Ligotti tribute, are labors of love for me. The roster of contributors who have said they will submit to these books is looking wonderful. I believe TLO members will be quite pleased.

BEST!! !

:) Thanks!! ! I believe the 1st RWC panel was the '99 con -- and yer right, I did run my mouth :)

I'll keep you updated as I can. I wish I could mention names, but not yet. There are some already who make me dance around the room. And there are some notable TLO members/writers who have very kindly agreed to submit.

As far as contributors go, everyone who knows Matt Cardin's comments on a new golden age of horror, well think some of the names that get mentioned when thinking of that, and yer in the ballpark.
