Announcing SYLVAN DREAD: TALES OF PASTORAL DARKNESS

Dr. Valzer

Mystic
Good evening, denizens of TLO. I'm very pleased to report that, at long last, my fifth collection of supernatural fiction is set for release in June 2016 by the prestigious esoteric publisher Three Hands Press.

Entitled Sylvan Dread: Tales of Pastoral Darkness, this book is a meditation on daemonic and living Nature — the place where all dreams and nightmares begin. In this isolate copse readers will witness the excavation of abominations long earthbound, the twilight of the rational, and the forgotten violence of the Dionysian Rite.

Sylvan Dread will be available in three editions: a Special Edition, a hardcover with dustjacket, and a trade paperback.

Information and pre-order options can be found here.

With thanks,
Richard Gavin

That's great news. I really enjoyed At Fear's Altar, and the stories that have been popping up lately in this or that anthology (like "tinder row") have been a good read. Looking forward to this new collection.

Hi Spiral - We are looking into an eventual electronic version, yes. I'm not sure exactly when the e-book would be available, but it is a strong possibility for the future.

Thank you for the interest.

Advance praise for Sylvan Dread:

"In medieval times scholars spoke of 'Natura naturans'--- Nature reveling in her sheer fecundity and pagan vitality. Like Blackwood and Machen before him, Richard Gavin knows the inhuman yet seductive rapture of the deep woods; he has heard the ancient music on the hills. In his stories of 'sylvan dread,' his protagonists explore uncanny ravines and hillside clefts, take part in sacrilegious rites, encounter maenads and goatbrides and Lovecraftian horrors. Gavin’s prose is always quietly controlled, carefully crafted, but it inexorably leads his men and women into realms of terrifying otherness, where they are changed, changed utterly."

Very few contemporary writers do what Richard Gavin does with his dark songs, as if tapping into a vein pulsing close to surface skin of the Other Side.

Looking forward to buying this Tome in a Hardcover with dustjacket included. When I first saw the title a singular image surfaced in my mind the Sacred Wood by Arnold Bocklin.

I had dinner with S. T. last night and we spoke glowingly of Richard Gavin's work; & that reminded me to pre-order ye new book in hardcover. SO looking forward to it!!

Hi, Richard. Is it possible to find affordable copies of The Darkly Splendid Realm?

Hello, ghostfactory. Alas, with The Darkly Splendid Realm being out of print, I'm afraid its prices are left to individual sellers. It is disheartening to see how ludicrous some of those asking prices have become. In the next year or two, to remedy this, I hope to bring some of my earlier work back into print in an affordable edition. If and when this occurs, I will announce it on TLO.

I appreciate your interest.

Didn't The Darkly Splendid Realm use to be available as an ebook? I'm quite sure it was but i couldn't find it

RICHARD GAVIN: THE DARKLY SPLENDID REALM ebook

Good day, Spiral.

My apologies for this late reply; I've not been online much of late.

To answer your question: yes, Dark Regions Press did have an e-book edition of The Darkly Splendid Realm available at one time. However their publication rights lapsed and reverted back to me.

I will likely be exploring having my first three collections reissued at some point in the future. If and when this happens I will certainly announce it here on TLO.

Thanks for your interest.

R.

Richard Gavin has a gift for devising evocative titles for his works. Sylvan Dread: Tales of Pastoral Darkness is probably the most brilliant title for a collection that I've come across in a while. I can't wait to finally have this book in my hands!
