Born Under A Black Sun

I'm curious as to how many of you have bought and/or seen the ColourSoundOblivion dvd-boxset from COIL. Along with the entirety of the Dublin show the below clip from the Königsberg show is probably my favourite COIL live moment so far. Which are yours?

Mine was # 87 and I've had it for a couple weeks now.

I haven't viewed most of the DVDs due to my obsessing over the 3 Black Antlers gigs and, of course, Dublin.

I love it. 'I Can't Get A Word In', from CSO 12 Amsterdam, has to be one of my favorite Coil songs. And I love the Dublin show, CSO 14, from the spaced out rendition of 'White Rainbow' to 'Going Up.' However, the middle three/four tracks are the true meat of the beast!!!.

I enjoyed The Ape of Naples and The New Backwards, but Coil's final show in Dublin is, for me, the ultimate farewell from one of my favorite groups, ever. It's a shame that it's only currently available in a very expensive boxset most people can't afford, or wouldn't buy if they could. Thankfully these DVDs are supposed to be released individually late this year, early next...

I've heard rumors that an Unnatural History IV is in the works, as well as what may turn out to be a double album of earlier mixes of tracks from the Backwards sessions. I've also heard rumors that the Moon's Milk reissue may not be happening due, in part to Sleazy compiling the Coil Codex - the entire Coil discography on a USB stick or Blue-Ray disc... I forget which.

I completely concur with you about the utter blissfulness of the Dublin show. It is profoundly moving in ways that I have difficulty putting my finger on.

Of the three shows centered around 'Black Antlers' I have only seen the Paris one. But the other two are just as good you say?
All of the other shows in the box I have seen at least once. I did so over a weekend at a friend's house as I couldn't afford the box myself.

Just so that everyone knows what we're talking about:

Something tells me that the COIL Codex USB stick, as well as the other things you mention, will be a long time in coming as Sleazy must be very busy working towards several other projects he has announced at Thresholdhouse (all of them very exciting!): a new incarnation of 'Time Machines', Throbbing Gristle's version of Nico's 'Desertshore' album, unklesleazy.tv and probably new SoiSong too. There's a lot to look forward to. But I'm still missing Balance.

This is such beautiful, amazing, remarkable footage. It's so odd to find it here on Ligotti.net, after hearing so much about it on the Coil mailing list. It's strange the threads that unite the disparate, under a black sun. Or maybe not so strange.

Dr. Livingstone I presume?

I'll start off by confessing that until this morning I hadn't given much attention to the Reconstruction Kit that comprises CSO 15 &16. For those who don't know, the Kit features the projections and *instrumental* loops Coil used during their performances.

So I popped it into my DVD player and at first I'm impressed with the material. But then Sick Mirrors starts playing and I notice Jhonn's vocals. They're not his vocals from Live Three, either. These *sound to me as if they* were recorded and mixed in studio!

I think I discovered an unreleased Coil song. Yes, a loose, live version appeared on Live Three but this one's got a different vibe to it. For instance I think Balance's lyrics during the initial build of the song (the first 7 mins) are much better on this version than the live one.

It's a 14 minute track, too!

That's all,

P.

*"sound to me as if they" added later for clarity's sake

Thanks for pointing that out. Like you, I haven't given much attention to it. You're right: The version of "Sick mirrors" is truly interesting but I'm pretty sure the vocals were not recorded in the studio. I guess, it's a recording from a show not included in the boxset as you can hear the audience at the end of the song.

I checked Youtube... there were three versions of Sick Mirrors and they're very different from this one. For instance, Balance starts speaking before the hurdy gurdy starts. Also, there's lots of reverb on his vocals, not so on the CSO 15 version. I've got a bootleg from this tour on a hard drive somewhere... I won't stake my life on it but from what I recall it, like the version on Live Three, bleeds straight into AYOR.

But that's only three and I think Coil performed 7 or 8 shows for this tour and Sick Mirrors was a staple in their set at the time.

The applause coupled with Balance thanking the audience at the end threw me off but his performance throughout the track is suspiciously tight. As much as I love Coil I find Balance in concert to be very loose, if not sloppy.

However, it could very well be a version from a performance not included in the set. CSO 16 includes loops from A Slip in the Marlybone Road, from ...And the Ambulance Died in His Arms.

I could keep bouncing from one position to the other, no pun... Anyway, I'll email Sleazy, see what he says.

Just thought I should mention that someone on the Coil list was kind enough to do some digging and discovered that this version of Remote Viewer is indeed live. It's from a performance that took place on April 13 2002 at Alte Spinnerei in Glauchau.

What a strange coincidence. That was my first ever Coil gig and certainly one of the most intense concert experiences.
