Favorite (must watch):
Werner Herzog: I am a big fan. I plan to watch all of his films and documentaries eventually. For me, he is *the* director I need to watch.
Michael Haneke: Difficult to stomach but forever intriguing. His films pain me in a way I can't explain. It's like they are twisting with my mind when I watch them.

Bong Joon-ho: He made some of my favorite movies of all time like Memories of Murder, mother and Parasite. However, I didn't like Okja or The Host.
Kiyoshi Kurosawa: Cure, Pulse, Seance, Retribution, Creepy. I don't know if he can ever go back to directing something like "Cure" again so I have to place him here.
David Paul Cronenberg: To me his film doesn't have the same impact as Bong Joon-ho or Kurosawa but Crimes of the Future is definitely more interesting than Aster and Peele's latest stuffs.
Just Observing (missed or is missing potential)
Ari Aster: I like Hereditary a lot but Midsommar is just alright and then Beau is Afraid...he's stretching it. He might come back with something like Hereditary but at this point who knows?
Jordan Peele: So far 1/3. He has not delivered the same quality thriller/horror of Get Out but people keep praising him. Us and Nope are just not up there.
Nicholas Winding Refn: I keep waiting for something like Valhalla Rising and Drive but he might have really peaked with them and is now going more and more into slow cinema.

I have some favorite directors: Bresson (he even wrote a fantastic book on the creative process: "Notes on Cinematography") and Bergman.
But above all my favorite director is Quentin Dupieux
The way the uses humour and absurdity is fantastic.
Reality is his best film. Wrong Cops and Rubber are awesome as well.

Jonathan Glazer
I saw Zone of Interest at the theater recently. It was an excellent film, albeit difficult to take. IMDb lists Glazer as being known for:
Sexy Beast (2000) 7.3
Birth (2004) 6.2
Under the Skin (2013) 6.3
Zone of Interest (2023) 7.9
I had no idea he directed Sexy Beast. I love that movie. I used to drink and watch that quite bit back in the day.
I've seen Birth but didn't care for it.
Under the Skin is good, but odd. Very different from the novel. I read the novel due to a recommendation by Joe Pulver.
Zone of Interest may be his best film. I don't know if it has been nominated for any Oscars. If it has, I doubt if it will win any due to the subject matter.
Rose Glass is another director that I am enthusiastic about. I thought her first film Saint Maud was very good. She has a new movie due out this month with the title Love Lies Bleeding that looks promising. I posted the trailer earlier.

Shane Carruth and Amy Seimetz. I specially loved Upstream Color and Sun Don't Shine. A shame Carruth turned to be a huge asshole and ruined his career.

Let me guess, another hidden propaganda film about alien learning to become pc "human"?
No matter, there are exceptions to the rule, especially from independents. But I fear we are moving in giant leaps towards a mixture of Aldous Huxley's Brave New World and George Orwells's 1984 (leaning towards Huxley, but eventually may go full Orwellian). Deceitful in any case. It looks like Europe is now being shoved towards World War III and A-bomb devestation. The present leaders are more and more coming from my own generation, born in the 1960s and after - spoiled brats, detached from reality, and with no sense of experience from the times and horrors of war. With Napoleon Complex, and who enjoys to go out and play war, without careful reflexion or hesitation, proving they can play with the big boys. Willing to sacrifice all, even millions of lives, for their bull-headed principles. All attempts at diplomacy and dialogue thrown out the window. I think those who instruct them from higher places (or deeper), actually wants another World War. They need the total destruction in order to usurp and be able to implement their New World Order and totalitarian World Government.
Sorry for going political, but I look with great sadness upon where we seem to be heading.

Under the Skin is based on the novel by Michel Faber. It really is about an alien seducing men to study them. I like the movie better.
As far as politics go, I wouldn't be averse to discussing them with TLOers that have an interest. But I don't want to clutter the board with such discussions as they often get heated. I tried to start a social group:
The Ligottian Society
for just such discussions. But I don't know how to go about it, or even if they still work. I think Brian was the tech brain behind the site.

Yes ..., focusing on men in particular. Sounds like yet another typical piece of feminism, spreading man hate and division. When we are in reality both biological and sexually minded by nature, women perhaps even more strongly so.
I was watching 1984 last night, the 1954 BBC-TV television adaption with Peter Cushing. It was extremely unpleasant, and more than a little reflecting our present times.

I find that the easiest way to make sure that a work exhibits the exact bias one is expecting is to just avoid watching or reading it and to simply pontificate from a position of utter ignorance.

Yes, well I find time, and mind, too valuable to watch everything available. Film is generally such an overrated, commerically driven medium, and the deterioration in genuine quality and artistic integrity has gone fast downhill from the 1980s and onward. Entertainment for the inane masses. I have seen so much garbage over the years, that has left an unaesthetic poisonous contaminant mentally lingering in the brain. Eventually you need to learn to trust your intuition.
