Packages from the Postman

I'm not much of a collector these days, but if a bargain comes up, I'll grab it. I recently won two nice items on eBay. I got a copy of Frankenstein illustrated by Nino Carbe for less than $50. They usually sell for over $300. I got it so cheap that I spent another $25 for a facsimile dust jacket.

I also picked up a copy of Theoretical Detective for about $25. It is only the second copy that I have ever seen for sale. I think Brian won that one.

I finally won a hardcover copy of H.P. Lovecraft The Decline of the West by S.T. Joshi, published by Starmont House. It cost me less than $50.

And found a cheap copy of this H.R. Giger book. $15. It's a huge art book, but despite its title, it is not in English. Still worth it for such a low price.

I received these recently. A couple of t-shirts, (I used AI to remove the text from one of them.), a book I have been looking for, and a Kindle Scribe. Now I just have to figure out how to use it.

With my recent purchase of the limited hardcover of Michigan Basement and Zapffe's One the Tragic, and these few items, I bet I have spent over $400 on books recently. I have to rein it in. In my defense, I felt I had no choice. Plus, it's my only vice. (that I'm willing to admit to).

Part I

Plus, it's my only vice.

It is a good vice. Better than drinking and smoking. Although I must admit it is nice to have a good drink while reading some phantasmagoric books. It heightens the senses, and rapport, as Blackwood argued in "Max Hensig". Only problem is that it is short-lived, and rather quickly turns to sleepiness.

I bet I have spent over $400 on books recently.

With that in mind, I will gladly stop hesitating and go ahead and buy a few books I thought expensive.
You're lucky to live in the US as a collector, because the shipping cost from there is almost the worst part. And Ebay!!!, who have the audacity to overcharge shipping cost, making a profit from it, in what they call their Global Shipping Program, arguing that this 'ripoff' also covers import charges, custom fees, and taxes in the buyer's country, which it NEVER does.

I really need to buy a stereo power amp, instead of more books.

I had this album years ago but lost it in my storage unit debacle. I promised myself I wouldn't buy it again, but it came up really cheap on eBay, so I caved. I missed having it around.

The newest Egaeus Press book. Probably my favorite publisher when it comes to book design.

A series of essays on the Dover Trial. The Intelligent Design movement suffered a humiliating defeat. It was glorious. (the book cost less than $5)

Animalia. A novel about the transmission of violence and man's brutal treatment of the natural world.

The only expensive one was On the Tragic.
I've been looking for Dark Faith Last Rites for a long time. It finally surfaced on eBay for $20.
The Notes of An Anatomist I think was recommended by someone at TLO. It only cost $6. I've read some of it already. I like it so far.

Have not purchased books for months, instead saved up for a power amp.
Bought a few over the last couple weeks, plus some pre-orders arrived.

Top left are from Corona\Samizdat, top right from Swan River.
Vampire is Valencourt, lower right is "Dusk" from Side Real.
Middle is a bio of the troubled artist, Austin Osman Spare.
Recently, I read a story or novel where one of the characters was based on Spare (which was where I heard of him).
I cannot now recall what that story was. Anyone have an idea?

I expect to find more films I will have to hunt down.

The book in the middle is The Cobra Drank the Pupils from Our Eyes by Gary J. Shipley. A book of prose poetry.

A book on M.R. James that ties some of his ghost stories to his Medieval studies.

The new Guy de Maupassant book from Centipede Press. First book I have purchased from them in a while. S.T. Joshi's introduction is very informative.

I haven't read any Lovecraftian fiction in a long time. I've heard good things about this book. Great reviews on Goodreads.

I am still on the fench about the Guy de Maupassant, as i have the Tartarus Press book and from what i saw the only worth addition to this is the novella ''Doctor Heraclius Gloss''....
The ''The Dulwich Horror and Others'' by David Hambling is a quite underrated collection and i found all the stories included well-written! Personal favorites from that book are : ''The Dulwich Horror Of 1927'', ''The Thing In The Vault'' and ''The Devil's In The Deep Blue Sea''.
