Packages from the Postman

Infinite Fog recently released what they call the "Definitive Edition" of Coil's album Astral Disaster. It contains the CD versions on the original album as released by them (first time on vinyl) as well as the original versions released on the Prescription label, along with two LPs worth of outtakes from those original sessions. I never got a copy of the original Prescription LP, but when I did finally hear it, I consoled myself by declaring it a lesser version. To me, those tracks sound like demos. Still, it's worth hearing for the Coil adherent. All of this comes in a nice package, along with the LP size hardbound book with all the same music on CD.

It has just arrived. The Spanish edition of Zothique by Clark Ashton Smith, with an introduction by Lin Carter, is equivalent to the English version published by Ballantine Books. I’m finding it fascinating.
Cool! I've always liked the Ballantine Adult Fantasy imprint and have used it to discover books I hadn't known about. I have a five volume set of Smith, but they are in publication order, and the nice thing about these BAF publications is they are curated by theme. It's interesting that this publisher chose to keep the format of the Ballantine edition. Those came out long enough ago that they are their own thing now, as opposed to just another collection.

Taschen is a German company that produces very well designed art books, and which has gotten a lot of my money over the years. They make books in several form factors, from coffee table to massive tome. The other day they had a 50% off sale so I decided to splurge on an XXL sized book of HR Giger's work. I didn't realize when I got it how massive it actually is, ~13 lbs and ~12"x16", which doesn't fit in any bookshelf in my house. It's not easy just keeping that much book in your hands while you read. Glad I got it though it has work of his that I've never seen before.

The Last Thinkers boxset

This is a title I've wanted for quite awhile. Each of the five books are by authors whose work I enjoy, so I'll be diving into them soon. Although each book was issued as a stand-alone item, they originally were issued without dust jackets, unless I'm mistaken. As each book is numbered with the same letter, I'm guessing that The Last Thinkers was issued in an edition of 26 copies?

Based on the preview images it looks like several of the illustrations spread across two adjacent pages, meaning some of the image is hard to see in the gutter in the middle. This always annoys me. I recently got a large book of Zdenek Burian's dinosaur artwork and (though otherwise visually excellent) that had the same problem.

Yeah....I purchased this when it was originally published many many years ago.I brought the books individually when they were published individually over a number of months. They came without dust jackets. The slipcase was shipped out separately at a later date. There was a version which included dustjackets, but that was more limited

That is definitely a drawback of the book medium for images.
