I'm thinking of starting a review thread.
Not a recommendation thread, which we already have, but reviews.
Wide ranging, too, though I rarely watch tent pole extravaganzas.
Thoughts, one way or another?
 
I have enjoyed reading your reviews, but I am interested in what are personally your top 10 films. I was going to PM you asking this.
 
Maybe twenty years earlier I might have drawn up a Top 10.
Passions and opinions tend to wane as youthful exuberance diminishes.
Certainly there are films I admire and appreciate, just as there are guilty pleasures I enjoy, yet know are nonsense.
There are movies I watch and rewatch; titles I purchased on VHS, then Laserdisc, then DVD. eg: Pandora's Box.
I am highly aware that, for every rerun, I delayed something new.
My days are numbered, so to speak. Meaning I have more days behind me than before me.
Consequently, I tend to watch once. I also only have the tube on 1-2 hours a day. More would interfere with reading and writing.

I broached the subject to see if there was interest in a general review thread.
This forum has a tight focus and such a thread would cast a wider net, so to speak.
I can launch something, or continue to restrict my reviews to primarily Horror flicks.
 
I would like to read your review of Cache by Haneke.

I think such a thread should be focused on Horror, Thriller, or Comedy but if you're the caretaker of that thread-whatever floats your boat.
 
Give me a few days to mock something up.
I'll pitch in a couple of reviews to give a better idea.
Load it for a week, gauge feedback or interest.
Indifference? I can roll with that, too.

I am aware of that thread. (Nice to see that you and I share a taste for Asian cinema.)
I am also not blind to the fact that TLO is more specific that most forum boards.
Members may be utterly disinterested in movies Asian, French, indie, arthouse, Noir, Silent, Norwegian ...
Anything not related to Ligotti or horror, macabre, weird, surreal, etc ...
For me, it seems prudent to loft the suggestion rather than launch hogwild into uncertain territory.
I have already noted one suggestion to limit topics to Ligotti, HPL, horror authors, horrors films and jettison Politics, religion, and possibly non horror realms such as music, videos, diversion.
A fundamentalist interpretation of the site itself.
While I am hardly new to boards, I consider myself a youngling here and am still very much on first date behaviour.
So I ask.

I think any film with a pessimistic, brooding atmosphere should be considered okay for reviews. For example, Kiyoshi Kurosawa also directed bleak realistic films, like Tokyo Sonata and Cure, other than his ghostly works such as Kairo and Seance. Tokyo Sonata is a heart-wrenching film, regardless of its lack of weird elements. I mean, Ligotti was influenced by non-weird authors of a pessimistic bent too.

Any artists here?
I'd like to see a cartoon of the nihilist hitting the club or pub, trying to impress the ladies with his beliefs.
Pessimism - gloom - despair - apathy - futility.
Can you work that up for me, Bob?

Oh, and restrict reviews to downbeat films?

We don't have a book review page?

Truth be told, at other joints the heaviest scribblers are movie types.
The readers - them literary types - usually wave a title and declare, "Reading this!"
4th Grade all over again.

I'm loading the thread.
Whatever gets reviewed is OK by me.
Caveat emptor.
 
I'd be all for a movie review thread. I tried my hand at a review blog a few years back, I just couldn't find the time to keep it going. Writing a good movie review where you try to analyze the film and get to it's heart, is surprisingly time consuming-- at least it was for me.I'm sure many of us gravitate toward many of the same films. I look forward to the reviews!

I am presently dealing with image host problems at the review thread.
Hope to have this sorted in due course.
I am reluctant to jettison the photos, as I find them aesthetically pleasing.
Sorry for the maintenance.

75% is sorted. Have about 100 more images to shift, relabel, reload.
Moral here about reliance on "free" anything online as the internet rapidly evolves into profit machine..

Issues

Aarrgghh!
Once again, I am having problems with image hosting over at the review thread.
This has happened several times, with Dropbox, then with Photobucket.
I try to keep images at 500px wide, filesize Since July 2017, I had stashed them in a rather obscure web nook.
Last night, a night watchman noticed the singularity and disabled my account.
I have appealed to Overlords for reinstatement.
If not, I will devise a new strategy.

This time, TinyPic RIP.
Most I have copies of, but editing the URL will take awhile.
Good thing I never took up golf as a hobby.

I think I've replaced all the missing Tinypic images that were in my posts.

Lost Images

So ... image host problems again.
No surprise, this time.
Apparently Google wised up that I had been using one of their forgotten chambers to host images.
Every post from 2020 and earlier will need slight amending.
Might take some time. I believe I have a passel of Dropbox images, too, tweaked so they display.
Ain't Life grand?

One of those problems as hosting sites fail.
Anyone noticing a lost image from my posts, send a PM.
Note: I cannot do anything about a lost image on another member's posts.

Neither here nor there,
Subscene has folded. I had close to 200 subtitles there.
Links below those particular reviews no longer work.
I may or may not replace the links.
Someone or an AI program migrated them to subdl.
More of Life's uncertainties.
