While The Beatles were topping the charts with some forgettable album about a Colonel Pepper; while The Doors were releasing a passionless and moribund record called 'Strange Days'; as Jimi Hendrix was pumping out a succession of drudgeworthy and derivative singles from an LP called 'Are You Experienced?', Bowie was producing such cutting-edge gems as these:

Ah......little Bowie is waiting, clinging to a branch, hoping for a little romance.

Did you see the recent BBC series dedicated to German synthesiser music? It featured interviews with band members from Neu! who said that Brian Eno spent a few weeks pumping them for ideas and inspiration before trotting back to Berlin to record 'Low' and 'Heroes' with the Thin White Duke. They even pinched the name from this superb piece of music:

[Though the song 'Hero' seems to have inspired Iggy Pop's Bowie-produced Berlin music more, particularly 'Funtime' in terms of music, and 'The Passenger' in terms of lyrics.]
 
I'll always love the early Bowie.

I was going to get round to explaining in detail. But I never did.

I was going to say something like, "Bowie's career is a good example of what is meant by the phrase 'less is more', since in some peculiar way, his later career has actually served to detract from his early career."

But I bear no malice. How could I? In the words of Thomas Newton, "I don't hate anybody. I can't."
