The Death Penalty

Do you support the death penalty or oppose it?

I am an advocate of the death penalty.

Feeling that justice has been served is necessary for many extended victims of a crime to continue living rather than just existing. The foundation of our social compact and even of religion is this sense of justice. To me, society has a duty to see that justice is done.
In a capital case, the bar of evidence should be raised to "with scientific certainty" rather than "beyond a reasonable doubt". "Scientific certainty" would require supporting forensic evidence. That would eliminate unreliable eyewitness accounts, false/coerced confessions, and the like.
Additionally, the actions must be heinous and purposeful; crimes motivated by passion or committed while insane wouldn't qualify.
Many people do not understand the insanity defense. Legally, if you know you are committing a crime, you are culpable. For example, if two strangers are walking down the street and one goes berserk for no reason and stabs the other to death and continues on their merry way, that could possibly be an insanity case. But, in the same scenario, if after killing the person, they drag the body behind a bush to conceal it, then the individual is not legally considered insane, because they know what he did was wrong and did it anyway.

In the sentencing phase, an abusive upbringing would certainly be a mitigating factor and weigh heavily in the perpetrator's favor.

As to the method of death, that can be discussed. (Ted Bundy deserved the Brazen Bull.)

Here is a fascinating case that I feel would qualify for the death penalty. The perpetrator is not only sane, but is a high functioning individual.

I am interested in your opinions.

P.S.
If your objection to the death penalty is religious in nature, keep it to yourself. It has no value. Don't muck up the thread.

Long overdue. This lapse of time is unacceptable.
