The Future of TLO

TLO has suffered in membership decline and participation over the past few years, including dedicated social media resources (e.g. Facebook groups) that fulfill many of the interests and needs Thomas Ligotti followers. TLO had also suffered from a my absence in maintaining the reliability and performance of the site. I had so heavily modified the vBulletin 3 version of the forums that any upgrade to newer versions or other platforms would lose most custom features, most of which were not designed for later versions due to both the decline in forum popularity and vBulletin platform itself.

When the site became completely unreliable, I had to make a decision to upgrade vBulletin or adopt a new platform. I had purchased vBulletin 5 previously with this plan, but did not follow through due to my disappointment in the platform regressing in some aspects and vBulletin 6 did not alleviate most of these concerns. I chose instead to purchase XenForo, and in spite of my initial disappointments with the conversion and the daunting task of correcting data and rebuilding what features that can be replicated, I am now at peace with the decision.

Beyond the significant investment in the software, I have pre-purchased three years of remote hosting services and intend on spending what limited time I can afford on making gradual improvements. At some point, I will email membership with a one-time notice that TLO has been resurrected, as I believe we lost several members due to technical frustration or the belief that the site was lost forever.

In spite of my personal time away from TLO, I still believe that it should remain in existence for as long as possible. I would like very much for membership and participation to increase, but even if it remains a ghost frequented only in passing by curious onlookers or a select few fervent followers, it shall remain as David Tibet once mused "a shining brainless beacon of elegant mutations and cunning annihilations."

Thank you, sincerely, for your ongoing service and efforts, Brian. Your post here has generated a wave of nostalgia as I contemplate the nearly thirty years of TLO's existence, along with the remarkable fact that it's still here. Please contact me on the side, if you like. You shouldn't have to shoulder the financial burden alone.

Thank you so much for the kind words of encouragement and support, Matt. I only mentioned the financial investment to reinforce my commitment to TLO, and I have never expected to reimbursed in any way. I contemplated having a mechanism for small donations at some point, but I do not want the added pressure of expectation with having others financially invested. For now, it is important for me to shoulder the burden alone, as it also serves as an incentive to invest my time to justify the expense. If I do not play upon my own psychological idiosyncrasies, then others will have all of the fun without me benefitting personally. ;)

Yes, many thanks, Brian. I also agree with Matt and Masonwire as to a chance to donate. The thing I miss most are the recommendations. I'm not in the loop on other platforms. I've never joined Facebook or Reddit for example. And don't care to. I've always tried to elicit participation, but followers of TLO tend to be a little on the reticent side.

I know I don't post much, but I've been around for a good while. I'm semi-retired now so if you need any help with the site please let me know. TLO has always been a place I come for the warm and fuzzies and I would really hate to not have this place as a daily respite. Thanks for keeping this place going.

Essentially, my work is not yet done but business as usual. ;)
Anyway, no need to worry. I was venting on the trials and tribulations of getting things back in order while reassuring everyone that TLO is going nowhere. The latter statement could be taken literally, figuratively, or liminally. The latter word is not a word but it should be one.

Willing to make a donation if requested.

By the way, the site seems to be in dark mode I guess you'd call it, white text on black background. Is there a way to change this? I've looked but I haven't been able to find anything.

Try this:

A different perspective from the tenured members: I'm relatively new to the site and delighted to have found it. It has been a bright spot in a dark time in my life (and, in a way that I think people on this forum will understand, I feel similarly about weird fiction and horror in general). Thank you! 🙏

You were unable to log into the old site, or are you referring to the period when the site was down completely?
I was completely unable to log into the old site for several months before it went down completely, and for whatever reason the reset password email refused to send anytime I requested it in an attempt to recover my account. Tried it again this evening and the email was sent and received immediately. Hence why I'm back now. :)

Perhaps on Halloween I will send out a mass email inviting members to revisit. I typically avoid this and I would prefer to have housekeeping in better order, but I suspect it would reinvigorate activity to some degree. Thoughts everyone?

I think that's a good idea. I'm sure I'm not the only one who thought the forum had vanished for good. Thanks for resuscitating it!
