Who Is David Tibet? (2019)

Ligotti’s works are for me kind of gateway, which lead me to different other things. Of some of them I was already aware earlier, but after Tom's influence I decided to get more familiar with them. Other ones were totally unknown to me. Among the latter ones is Current 93. Thanks to good people of YT, I had a chance to listen to their collaborations with Tom, and also sone of their other songs. It is more avant-garde music than the common things I usually listen to, but I've enjoyed it a lot anyway. Recently, while checking their website, I learnt about this short documentary, accompanying David Tibet's exhibition in California in 2019. I gind it very interesting, visually impressive, and it was great to see his artworks, which I knew earlier only from covers of their albums. I guess that many of you might already watch it, but still I would like to share it here:

(BTW thanks to Ligotti, I also watched some documentaries on Zapffe and Cioran, and it made me think that it would be great to see documentary about him, but with him being very private person, I guess that there's small chance for it.)

I did it the other way: I found Thomas Ligotti through Current 93. I'm not entirely sure about David Tibet, as far as his art, though there is a certain something, which I would call sincerity, present in his work, both visual and aural. I like his voice, but his delivery can be very overdone, with too much affectation, and his lyrics can be overwrought. But he manages to attract other (better?) artists to collaborate with him, I suspect because of his artistic vision. That said, I have collected pretty much all of his music through about 2005, when I went off in other directions. When I returned, I caught up, somewhat, and have stayed current but have passed on his many many exclusive releases. They just plain go for too much money. There are times when I play several in a row, several days in a row, and other times I need a break. But I have to thank him for steering me toward many writers I hadn't known about before.

ETA: Now for Coil I have only the highest regard. And then they went and died too young...

Speaking for myself, I've never been a fan of Current 93 or David Tibet. That said, I must admit that DT has great taste in books and music.

Ironrose mentioned Coil. Their work is wonderful. Geoff (John Balance) and I were friends, and we carried on a correspondence between 1980 and 1983 or so. I still have his letters. He was very supportive of my music at the time. Yes, he died far too young. We had fallen out of touch for many years. I never knew that he had substance abuse issues, and as someone who's survived that lifestyle, it still haunts me that I wasn't there for my old friend to offer my experience, strength, and hope.
