Campbell doesn't have a right-wing bone in his body, ffs. Also, I thought that Allyson Bird thought highly of him, so I cannot imagine what could have le her to making such accusations against him... Here's hoping that this is nothing more than another poor joke taken out of context.

No, these arguments have been going on for some time (with zero interaction from Mark I might add). The short version: a minor figure in the British Horror publishing scene, David Riley, used to be involved with the National Front (skinhead/white nationalist group) and apparently still holds some distasteful views re immigration. Riley is a regular attendee at the British Fantasy Convention as is Campbell and his friends.

Bird allegedly criticized anyone who did not denounce Riley's presence at that convention as a right-wing sympathizer. Campbell - who, as we all know, is very anti-censorship - denied this and refused to stop attending the convention merely due to Riley's presence. Someone on Bird's Facebook, might not have been her, then starts making allegations about the British horror scene being filled with fascists.

Bestwick gave another very entertaining post spoofing the British Fantasy Convention as the Nuremberg Rally.

For nearly a decade now there have been a fair number of (mostly male) writers in the horror/Weird Fiction community who have sided with Bird and supported her claims without apparently bothering to wonder all that hard if maybe some of the allegations she were spouting were nothing more than mere delusions. How nice that in recent months some people have finally seen the light and begun to turn on her and her nonsense (and if I sound bitter about this, I ran afoul of her and her cronies over the summer... as I joked to Mark at the time, "I don't know how you've had the patience to deal with her for almost a decade now, as I've gotten tired of her after a mere one week"). This latest case (if she did indeed make such a claim: I've heard that someone else made the claim on her Facebook page and she simply agreed, or didn't bother to refute it) is a good example of biting the hand that feeds you, I think... did she not ask Campbell, many years ago, to write a blurb for her debut collection (which he did?).

This is why i get so hot and bothered about these kinds of threads. This is a pretty huge disclaimer.

This latest situation with Thomas Ligotti (if he does indeed club seals for fun while screaming like a lunatic; although, to be fair, i've heard versions that actually say he attends raves at Club C) is a great example of his nihilistic tendencies.

For the record, I'm not snapping at you, Frater. Clearly, there's some backstory here which makes this bruhaha resonate with you. I don't pretend to take a position on that personal history. All I know is that in this particular case there's a great deal of outrage by people who have no idea what was actually said. I have no horse in this race, but would like my righteous indignation to indeed be righteous.

Well, I should add that I hope I don't come off as righteous, as I'm not crazy about righteous people in general... in regards to some other writers on the scene that I'm not wild about, I get the impression that they sincerely think they're good, upstanding people, and that sort of thing annoys me... people can say what they wish about me, but one thing that can't be denied is that I certainly don't downplay my flaws.

One thing that does genuinely annoy is that some people at TLO are quick to criticize Mark's critiques of the forums, yet never seem to observe that Bird has done the same thing (though in contrast to Mark she seems to see the forums as a haven of right-wing misogyny).
