Hahaha what a great quote. Just imagine Ligotti giving a televised interview on his philosophy, getting called a reactionary, and he responds: "In the words of Bill Maher, I'm the liberal in this debate!"

I thought Ligotti was socially liberal, but economically socialist? I suppose he's using 'liberal' in the modern cultural sense. It confuses me.

I've always said Ligotti's philosophical and political views don't mesh. I know they're often explained by describing him as a compassionate antinatalist. But socialism holds a very progressive view, a belief that life can be made better and that human nature will come along for the ride. Some things are just natural opposites. Like peanut butter and tuna sandwiches...or cheese and sardines...or...

I think it makes perfect sense that somebody whose antinatalist worldview is based on mitigating/eliminating suffering would believe socialism is preferable to capitalism.

I don't think there's anything inherently pessimistic about wanting the workers to own the means of production instead of leaving this vital societal framework to competing private enterprises who arrived at their position of responsibility through chance. It just makes more sense.

If I remember correctly, according to the interview Ligotti gave to Tina Hall at Macabre Cadaver and then transferred to The Damned Interviews, he considers himself a Socialist because life is so meaningless and full of suffering that we should make everyone's life as less painful as possible. I see no contradiction in that.
