Re: Reggie Oliver
I am pleased to confirm the contents of the first Egaeus Press book - Reggie Oliver's Shadow Plays - set for publication in March. They are:
Beside The Shrill Sea Miss Marchant's Cause The Boy In Green Velvet The Golden Basilica The Dreams Of Cardinal Vittorini The Time Of Blood The Constant Rake The Skins The Blue Room Bloody Bill Love Unknown - A play in two acts The author furthermore provides a preface and introductions to each piece, imbued with all the wit and insight we have come to expect from this very fine writer. I have previously stated that pre-orders will not be available for this book. I am however now in a position to reserve copies for anyone who would like to drop me an email or otherwise get in touch via Facebook or some other platform. Copies will then be reserved for a month following publication. Price will be in the region of £30 for Europe, possibly very slightly more for the rest of the world. Thank you kindly for your attention. |

Re: Reggie Oliver
Any update on Egaeus Press's book Shadow Plays? I saw an update of a picture of the cover of Shadow Plays on their website posted March 25th but haven't heard about publication or pre-order (though last I recall they were planning on not taking pre-orders). Was wondering if anyone had additional information.

Re: Reggie Oliver
Reggie Oliver's Shadow Plays is now available from the website, www.egaeuspress.com.
...A lavish, nocturnal entertainment in which the author presents ten of his early supernatural tales as well as a previously unpublished two act play, concerning, amongst other things, the writer M.R. James.... Shadow Plays is a lithographically printed, 352 page sewn hardback with printed endpapers. It is limited to 250 copies. Copies can be purchased for £30 (British pounds). https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-J...2520photo1.jpg Thank you and goodnight. |
Re: Reggie Oliver
I literally just pulled off the road at the nearest wifi connected spot and placed my order. I was (am) on a road trip (I40West at the moment in Amarillo) and the email popped up on my phone. Couldn't pull off quick enough. Patience is obviously not a virtue I possess; but I do have access to my PayPal account and I can live with the trade off.
Time to get back on the road |
Re: Reggie Oliver
Wow, what a gorgeous looking book..
|
Re: Reggie Oliver
I was trying to resist ordering this book, as I have all of the stories already, and I've never been too interested in reading plays, but as soon as I saw the sheer gorgeousness, I simply couldn't resist. Shadow Plays appears to be a volume of immense aesthetic appeal. If this is to be the standard of forthcoming Egaeus Press books, I am very excited indeed!

Re: Reggie Oliver
Shadow Plays arrived today and very nice it looks too, so well done to Egaeus.
Unfortunately, it was shipped in a flimsy jiffy bag, so rather inevitably suffered some bumped corners when slam-dunked through my letterbox by the postie. I won't beat on Egaeus too much, but jiffy bags are a real no-no especially for a thirty-quid book. |

Feedback taken on board re. packaging. I have just invested in something better. My apologies to you. I hope you aren't too disappointed.
|
Re: Reggie Oliver
No worries, Egaeus. There will always be teething problems with any new venture!
The cardboard mailers are probably the most cost-effective option (as used by Tartarus, Cold Tonnage etc) - even cheaper if you bulk-buy online. |

Re: Reggie Oliver
I received my copy of Shadow Plays yesterday. Yes, the edges were a little bit bent up, but it was still in pretty good condition considering it crossed an ocean in just a padded envelope. I'm not overly fussy when it comes to my books anyhow, and I'm hoping that I'm never in dire enough financial straits that I have to sell any of them either, when their condition would matter more. Anyhow, it really is a gorgeous volume!
What I must admit did disappoint me, however, is that I didn't get a signed bookplate. I don't really understand why somebody would have to specifically request one if they were available. |
Re: Reggie Oliver
Freyasfire: The bookplates were never intended to be a feature of this publication. Reggie very kindly took it upon himself to supply them via myself to people who initially approached him directly. I have never supplied them ready pasted into copies of Shadow Plays.
(Also, again, following the initial mail-out, I've thoroughly reviewed the packaging, and all books are now packed with cardboard. I can only apologise, again.) |
Re: Reggie Oliver
Just got back in town to find my Egaeus book. Glad the packaging will be reinforced in the future but honestly Amazon routinely bangs up my packages far worse. The book looks absolutely beautiful. Their website says two books are upcoming, one in the summer, one in the fall and I will definitely be buying from them as soon as orders are being taken. If you haven't seen the Oliver book, find a copy quick.

Re: Reggie Oliver
An eBay seller has listed several copies of Oliver's first collection, The Dreams of Cardinal Vittorini, for sale. At £95/$150 the price is steep, but still lower than is typical for this title. At the moment there are three left. Click here to see the listing.

Re: Reggie Oliver
Hello,
Being new to Reggie Oliver's work, can anyone suggest a good book of his to start me off? Thanks in advance! |

I started with Chomu's Dracula Papers myself, so that's an option too. It's a wonderful book as well. Also, an ebook version of Masques of Satan was released recently. If you're into Kindle and stuff |
Re: Reggie Oliver
Thanks very much EemeliJ!
I actually had my eye on Mrs Midnight....(so to speak!) so will start there and no doubt find myself moving onto others soon after. Thanks :) |
Re: Reggie Oliver
I forgot to mention Shadow Plays, from Egaeus and his press. I'm not exactly familiar with the contents, but someone said it has mostly reprinted stories from Mr Oliver's earlier collections.
|
Re: Reggie Oliver
I would second EemeliJ's rec's. Mrs. Midnight is a great collection and a great (and affordable) place to start with Oliver. Shadow Play is a little pricey and the big addition is "Love Unknown", a two act play which includes, among the cast, MR James. Great collection but the mother of all Oliver collections is "Drama From the Depths" from Centipede Press. It is, far and away, the Rolls Royce of Oliver collections.
|
Re: Reggie Oliver
While I think Mrs. Midnight a very good collection, I would actually recommend starting with Dramas From the Depths; expensive as it is, it's very good value for money. I can thoroughly understand why one would start with Mrs. Midnight, though, but Dramas...collects almost everything (bar a few very short pieces from Madder Mysteries) from Oliver's superb three first collections. Until those three gets reprinted in a more affordable edition, Dramas... would be, for me, the place to go.

some madman is selling a copy of reggie oliver's symphonnies of adolf hitler for one penny on ebay:

Re: Reggie Oliver
Trying to forget my own natural bias with regard to this story, but judging by the reviews it has generated (shown here: Flowers of the Sea | The Nemonicon) - I am surprised that FLOWERS OF THE SEA has apparently not been chosen for any BEST OF volume or nominated for any award. I only hope that its presentation by me within the HA of HA has not contributed to this otherwise surprising neglect, a neglect for what is, I feel, a truly great and disturbing horror story, one that ought to go down in literary history as such.
I am also in love with all the other stories in the HA of HA, of course, but judging by the nature of the uniform praise for FLOWERS OF THE SEA and my own instincts stemming from such public demonstrations of appreciation (as well as from other private notifications to me from readers), I am so minded to make the statement above. http://nullimmortalis.files.wordpres...-df2.jpg?w=640 Artwork: Tony Lovell |
Re: Reggie Oliver
I really enjoyed the HA of HA; it was a superb anthology. Out of the stories though, "Flowers of the Sea" was my favorite. This may have more to do with me being a huge Oliver fan but I agree that this story is a masterpiece.

Re: Reggie Oliver
that copy of the regie oliver's symphonies of adolf hitler listed on ebay is still pretty cheap compared to other prices out there. it went from a penny to $100, still well below the other crooks.

Re: Reggie Oliver
Good news for readers wanting access to Oliver's early stories at a reasonable price: Tartarus Press is issuing a new paperback and e-book edition of his first collection, The Dreams of Cardinal Vittorini. The first two hundred copies of the paperback will be signed by the author. Details here.

Re: Reggie Oliver
Tartarus has followed up its paperback reprint of The Dreams of Cardinal Vittorini with one of The Complete Symphonies of Adolf Hitler. The first 200 copies have again been signed and numbered by the author.

Re: Reggie Oliver
Dances in the Dark was the original planned title of Mrs Midnight and Other Stories. If the interview you're thinking of is this one, it's not actually recent; the interviewer moved to a new blog and copied the older content over. It's really from June 2011.
|
Re: Reggie Oliver
Well, shucks. I was hoping he might have a new collection coming out sometime soon with some of the more/most recent stories I've yet to take a peek at (the apparently much-loved "Flowers of the Sea," for example). I don't think it's been mentioned in this thread yet, either, but Tartarus just released a new paperback edition of The Complete Symphonies of Adolf Hitler TODAY.
