The best movie news in the history of movies or news

Nicolas Cage to Star in 'Color Out of Space' — Variety

Not only is Lovecraft a perfect fit with the, uh, loosely hinged onscreen persona Cage has been perfecting for years now, but the director attached to the project is none other than heavyweight cult-movie shaman Richard Stanley.

This sounds like such a perfect melding of sympatico talent and vision it almost doesn't matter how the movie turns out. It could be a bomb. Hell, it probably won't even end up getting made. But the news itself is inspiring enough to suggest something way beyond the usual humdrum hopes of some forgettable Netflix-produced crowdpleaser--this is the promise of something only true wacko genius could conjure, and that all by itself is enough to lift humanity's despairing collective soul to a higher plane, at least temporarily.

I honestly cannot dream up a possible new horror adaptation that would sound more promising than this news. John Carpenter doing Dunwich Horror with, I dunno, Jeff Goldblum, maybe? But then Goldblum's probably way too old for the part, and I doubt Carpenter has the enthusiasm or the energy for another grand horror spectacle along the lines of The Thing.

I saw Richard Stanley present some of his ideas and concepts for that film at the last Necronomicon. From the pictures he showed, it seemed as if he had certainly been influenced by (or wanted to pay homage to) John Carpenter's "The Thing" (which is IMHO maybe the best Lovecraft movie ever).

Review of Stanley's Color out of Space

Quote:

Stanley approaches this narrative with a true sense of wackiness, really leaning into the ridiculousness of the daughter riding her horse through ancient New England forests with Satanic tattoos like she’s in an 80s fantasy film or Cage yelling about milking Alpacas at the local water surveyor for some reason. No people would act the way they do in this film and each of the actors honestly feels like they’re in a different film from one another, creating this disorienting, meta comedic effect which might seem like an odd choice for horror but if anything, it is so strange it registers as if we are watching a transmission beamed in from another planet.
Everything that’s peculiar before the colors contaminate them is then exacerbated and we are greeted with an escalating sense of delirium as the wordless, psychedelic carnage of the alien creature whose feelings, motives and/or consciousness we are never made privy to. It’s conceptually very creepy and the combination of absurdity and the beautiful but very artificial CG effects gives this a frequently disarming lightness before its pivot into the kind of slimy, textured body horror that would make David Cronenberg squirm.

Re: The best movie news in the history of movies or news

I recently watched the documentary Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's Island of Dr. Moreau. I thought it was outstanding. What a clusterfk. My favorite part was the Outtakes with Stanley in the Extras. He has a deep understanding of the story and such creative ideas for directing it. What a loss. He even reads a wonderful passage from the novel. I can't remember if this was in the documentary or if I turned it up researching it on the net, but Wells was upset with Joseph Conrad for his story The Heart of Darkness because he thought Kurtz was derivative of Moreau! Never made that connection. I'll have to read them both again. I did break down and buy the 'Illuminated Edition' of Moreau, illustrated by Bill Sienkiewicz.

"The Thing" is frightening across species.

Have to get the bluray then, because I saw it on streaming and loved it. When I first heard about it, I thought it was probably jumping on the Dune documentary bandwagon, but it's actually much better.

I have to agree. Lost Soul is great.

I just borrowed a regular DVD through my interlibrary loan system. But I am glad you brought this up. I was going to buy it on Youtube for $10, but they wouldn't have the Extras. Saved me some money. I'll have to get the DVD or Blu-ray on eBay. Thanks.

Early reviews are in for Color Out of Space. 86% on RT from 44 critics. That's great for a genre film. The release date is January 24th. (wide?)
