Purchasing Ligotti Books...

I'm inquiring about a good place to order his books from. I ordered "The Shadow..." from Amazon, simply because its price wasn't too unmanageable, but cannot find any other books for sale at a reasonable price range. I know he's good, but $60 and more for one book is a little steep for a poor guy attempting to start a Ligotti collection.

So, where have you guys purchased your copies?

I hope to hear some news other than paying outrageous prices being the only choice :(

Edit: Also, I am wondering what your thoughts are on "The Thomas Ligotti Reader". I have no doubt that it's worth getting, but what did you find appealing about it?

I use amazon's used & new. I've found them down to a small 10 £. Many of them former library copies, but I'm not too picky about these things.

TLR is well worth picking up. Some essays are rather uninteresting, but many - especially the ones by Matt Cardin and Stefan Dziemianowicz are very enlightening.

Finding books by Thomas Ligotti for under $60 will be pretty difficult for you. Generally the only books within this price range are his new reprints:

-The Shadow at the Bottom of the World
-Teatro Grottesco (available in an affordable hardcover (for now), and the forthcoming paperback)

Most other Ligotti books are either limited editions from small press publishers or else long out of print. The trick is to stay ahead of the game and pre-order his books before they're released.

If you'd like advance noticed regarding his new work I would suggest regularly checking the websites of his usual publishers:

www.durtro.com
www.mythosbooks.com

Or you can sign up for their mailing lists.

If you're looking for out of print books, your best bet is Ebay or Abebooks. Occasionally TLO members post books for sale here (in rare moments of desperation or madness). Also, some horror fiction sites occasionally sell books on consignment. For example, right now, Horror-mall.com is selling Ligotti's SIDESHOW & OTHER STORIES.

SIDESHOW AND OTHER STORIES by Thomas Ligotti (Limited Edition)Horror Mall

Besides the two aforementioned books, one should expect to pay "outrageous prices" for his other work. In my case, (and I suspect other TLO members agree) I've found them worth every penny. Fortunately I got in early. They're expensive, but in the world of rare books, they're really not that bad. Ever see what a first edition Stephen King goes for? Anyway, keep reading, and eventually you'll find his books to be essential. Price will no longer be an issue. You'll .....be... one... of... us....

Arcangel, I would also try ABE book search, or one of several other book-oriented search engines. You can sort them by author, lowest price, and title, and with the click of a mouse get some very reasonably priced options.

If you're not obsessed with owning first editions, but just want the fiction, I would recommend picking up Teatro Grottesco (either the Mythos Books hardcover edition or the forthcoming softcover edition from Virgin Books). The collection includes Sideshow and Other Stories and In a Foreign Town, In a Foreign Land, two works which were originally published individually in relatively costly editions. If you can manage it, grab a copy of The Nightmare Factory. This is an essential omnibus compiling the lion's share of Mr. Ligotti's first three collections. Happy hunting!

Thanks to you, I did find this, for 70 US Dollars, in New Zealand! But I am still wavering...

Are you jesting? I think you must be, given the addition of the smiley. To be clear, copies of the Silver Scarab edition of SOADD normally go for $400 to $700, dependent upon condition.

Glad I sign-posted that - but yes, I was jesting. $3000 for a book boggles the mind (although I love books).

The only Ligotti any sane person has reason in paying $1000+ for, to be honest, would be one of the leatherbound copies of TAROVFAOGT, and the chance of finding such a copy is equivalent in the world of small press horror to finding the Sangrail. Only a copy of Punk-Surrealist Café or perhaps Grimoire is rarer...

Re: Purchasing Ligotti Books...

This is my first visit here. I only ran across Thomas Ligotti reading some Lovecraft critical essays. the name seemed familiar.

Then I saw this thread.

The Punk Surrealist Cafe and Nyctalops and Nocturne...indeed. I am quite surprised to discover 28 years later anyone has heard of these. Those were great days. Sutton Breiding and Harry Morris were on fire. Both were kind enough to publish some items of mine. I think I had the last prose poem in the last issue of PSC.

And yes, I do recall now that some fellow named Thomas Ligotti also published there. A few pages earlier in that last issue of PSC I believe.

I can't believe that anyone knows of these publications. I will have to round up my copies and revisit those days. Not sure what this community is interested in, but I will share what I can.
