Unfinished And In Progress

My digital stuff takes a long time, sometimes a long long long time. So I'll drop stuff in this thread that I'm working on, bits of things that will be transplanted into larger compositions, experiments, etc. Stuff I can post more frequently..

Here's a random color experiment titled Death Head..

Here's an odd animal that will likely find its way into a landscape composition of somekind or possibly standing guard in some dark interior..

The following is one of many flying creatures that will be flying in the night sky over a landscape, possibly on fire.

Aeron, your "odd animal" captures the very essence of a dog I once had. Thank you very much for these pieces!

I have to say, I like your work more than that of any other collage-medium artist. Before it would have had to have been Max Ernst for his Une Semaine de Bonte (My apologies, if I failed to spell that right, it wouldn't surprise me).

As far as I am concerned yours blows his collage work to bits, though to be fair, I should take into account the limited resources of his time for such a relatively new medium of art. It turned out amazingly, especially taking this into consideration.

Have you ever contemplated illustrating Maldoror? I have tried my hand at a few of its festive scenes, but the text seems to be so ideally suited for collage work.

G.S, that must have been an interesting dog.

trieffiewiles, yes Ernst was certainly the master of the traditional collage medium. Coincidentally, I did a portrait of Max Ernst specifically for a selection of his collages from his Une Semaine de Bonté book which was published in Craig Yoe's Arf Forum book. You can see it here - Arf Forum

I haven't considered doing anything associated with Maldoror.

I experimented with the idea of trying to get across an image in my head with as few manipulated layers as possible. This one is around 30, mostly untouched . The clean ups on this would take 10 hours or more to make it look... believable and not obviously a pile of photos dropped over each other. This would also need a lot of skinning, a term I coined for dropping in dozens of translucent and other filtered layers of textures to make the image more my own and to beef up the resolution. http://i37.tinypic.com/1fxlza.jpg

http://i33.tinypic.com/2m801o5.jpg Another quick study for a future more detailed collage. This one will likely be set on a stage with curtains pulled back on each side. The seats below the stage will be burned out with charred bodies, like everyone self combusted from an electric current channeled from the bat winged figure on the stage.

Well this is the quickest collage I've ever made. I found this pic of a pile of skinned goat heads and instantly knew I wanted to use it for a spider like monster in one of my collages. So I threw a tarantula on there to help me remember until I'm ready to put some detail into it and give it a home in the Land Of The Moth.

The Olympics being on again, I am watching much more TV than usual, thankfully we only have 3 or 4 working stations, so nothing has turned into an addiction, as I see happening all too often.

On Iowa Public Television the other day they had a special on one of the most interestingly freakish and clever of animals, the cuttlefish, particularly the ones in Indonesia that essentially hypnotize their prey using a strange neon light-like display. I do not doubt for a second Lovecraft was fascinated by this species in general, and I do wonder what intriguing #### you could come up with using cuttlefish, especially when they reshape their tentacles to resemble spire-like coral formations.

Yeah, cuttlefish are something I need to use more of. The textures are always very interesting on those animals. I've been acquiring imagery of beached whales and slaughtered whale flesh lately to use for... things. I love the textures of rotting aquatic animals for some reason,

The very beginning preparatory digital collage sketch for a huge image I'm working on. This is around 100 layers out of what will be over 3,000 when complete, so this is kind of like seeing the loose pencil sketch before a fully detailed painting is built on top.

I'm adapting a certain scene from Stephen King's story, The Mist. The basic composition is blocked in here but there are hundreds of strange details yet to be made. Downed power lines, the Scout vehicle driving towards the giant monster, a lot of mist effects blending in and out of everything. All manner of shadowy beasts half seen through rolling mists across the landscapes. Hundreds of monstrous insect creatures climbing across the 6 legged beast. I plan on having this one completed around March.

And so, when my Ligotti work is completed, it will now be part of a sort of series of these digital works I've been doing lately inspired by the writings of horror authors. The first being H.P Lovecraft..
