I never grow tired of listening to Tom Waits. My favorites are Dead and Lovely, Murder In The Red Barn and of course, What's He Building In There is eerie and wonderful. Also, for anyone that hasn't listened, Serge Gainsbourg is another great one to check out (Comic Strip being a really great album).

Piano Magic

"Glacial pop" from Britain that goes over best on the Continent and which needs more support in the States but sadly will probably never get it. They can do precious but it's so sophisticated. Chilling, actually.

Re: Favorite Bands?

I was about to mention Winehouse, too, and to think that I found about her music only because of news about her personal life! I don't know why, but I'm suddenly reminded of France Gall's "Poupée de cire, poupée de son".

Re: Favorite Bands?

Someone earlier mentioned Debussy... From what I've been told his work is quite interesting. I'm going to look into it.

Speaking of "modern classical", The Rite of Spring is pretty awesome, as is what little I've heard from LaMonte Young's The Well-Tuned Piano (gods, it's hard to find a copy).

Interpol I like, although more their early stuff. Get Well Soon I've never heard of, though. Winehouse does have a great voice, which is unfortunately overshadowed by the negative media coverage.

Stephen Jesse Bernstein. More of a poet than a band, but his album "prison" is probably the most played of anything in my collection.

Current favourites: the new SleepResearch Facility album, Deep Frieze, which has a cold, glacial feel not unlike Thomas Köner's Permafrost. Just solid 'mbient, really. Also, Lunar Aurora's Glück would be a black metal masterpiece without the stupid samples.
Last weekend I read HPL's The Colour out of Space while listening to Deep_Frieze. What an incredible experience this was! This music goes so well with stories featuring desolate places that I think I will make it a habit of listening to the album while reading some bleak weird fiction.
Thanks for the recommendation!

Re: Favorite Bands?

Just had to voice my gladness at the growing "metal contingent" here -- especially re: my shared interests, like Lunar Aurora, Deathspell Omega, Blut Aus Nord, and other weird by-products of the black metal movemement.

I haven't heard it yet, but I'm sure I'm not the only one to have noticed that Leviathan's new CD is entitled "Massive Conspiracy Against All Life." There has to be a connection there; it sounds like the kind of rewording one does when beaten by another artist to a grand idea or quintessence. I intend to do some reading of interviews to learn the details.

The new Meshuggah and Origin discs are amazing, though they're not really "dark." Just insane.

And I have to mention that there's a black/doom band (or one-man project) called Brown Jenkin, released on Moribund Records. Haven't heard it, but I can use my imagination ...

Re: Favorite Bands?

I know what you mean in regards to the new Leviathan cd...somebody started a thread with the album title and I instantly thought of CATHR.

I haven't got around to checking out the new Meshuggah, but I intend to.

Something I think most Ligotti fans and metal lovers should enjoy is Sculptured's Embodiment. Simply put, it's so far my favorite album of 2008, and it'll easily stay in the top 5. The album expands and at times obliterates the definitions of "avant garde progressive death metal" to new realms. The theme of the album revolves around the quote "Embodiment is the purest form of horror" (which also happens to be the title of track 6). The album is one of the most pleasant listening experiences I've had in quite some time. Also, if you're a fan of Agalloch at all, Sculptured is required listening since it's Don Anderson's other band (not sure whether I should call it his side project or main band).

Re: Favorite Bands?

I guess that my music tastes are a lot different than most of the other members. Don't misunderstand me. I like a lot of the bands that are listed in this thread but my favorites have not been mentioned.
The best band I ever saw was the Otis Redding band of the 1966-1967 era. He was backed by Booker T and the MGs and the Mar Keys horn section. There are a few videos and films from this period but Otis was best experienced LIVE!, and that is something that can't be done since he died in a plane crash in 1967. Still, once in my life I got to see the very best.
Currently I would say that Planxty is still my favorite band. There were incredible in the 1970's and get back together from time to time. They have become even better with time and hopefully will be around for a few more years. That is questionable, as Christy Moore has a heart condition. If you can catch them performing live do so for they are all about 60 yars old now.
I used to like Iggy Pop and the Stooges. And the Ramones. A lot of todays bands remind me of the San Francisco band The Residents. Maybe the reason that I don't like newer bands more is that they remind me of some earlier band. For example, Blink 182 must have listened to an awful lot of Ramones. So, rather than listen to them I pull out my old Ramones tapes and listen to the originators.

I'd be inclined to say that Soundtracks for the Blind is perhaps my favourite album overall, although as a band I probably favour Coil over Swans.

So what do you think of the new Opeth? I myself have been a bit ... befuddled, but in a good way.

I honestly don't know if I can choose one all time favourite album. this might take some time to think on. For me all time band might be either Portion Control, the Cure or Skinny Puppy. I too favour Coil over Swans. Personally I dig the instrumentation of black lodge over the dirge like pain that was Swans, however, they became more beautiful as the years progressed. especially when Jarboe joined Michael.

Wow, Cirith Ungol -- there's a name I haven't heard in a while. Massively influential and underrated (if not unknown), but their singer had a style that made them unlistenable to me. He really, really needed to come up with some new vocal cadences.

Other than that, they're great, hehe.

Oh, and I will check out Fear of God, thanks.

I recently saw a concert by Julia Kent (who used to play with c93 and still plays with Antony and the johnsons) and Fabrizio Modenese Palumbo. It was really good but, alas!, very far from the performances she used to be involved in with Current 93!
Can't wait to see them again and can't wait to receive "Under the rain and teeth of god" :p
