I was pleasantly surprised to discover the following essay in the latest issue of 'Faunus' (The Journal of the 'Friends of Arthur Machen').

"Spectre vs. Rector: The Fall and Arthur Machen" by Mark Goodall

Despite countless years of listening to The Fall I had no idea that Mark E. Smith was a Machen fan (no doubt in part due to my inability to decipher some of his more impenetrable lyrics!).

I wonder what he thinks of Ligotti?

Re: Favorite Bands?

I'm a little eclectic, but do like the dark melanomic nature of these two groups:

When this post-metal band moved into a converted mental institution, they stumbled upon an unexpected diary from an inmate: "Tales of the Eternal Kingdom," and its contents (dealing with an imaginary dimension of being from which monstrous entities streamed into our world commiting abysmal crimes, one of them being the murder of his wife...) provided them the potencies of their lyrical and dark invective albumn.

Erdenstern: At the Mountains of Madness - Music inspired by H.P. Lovecraft
Along with Nox Arcana and Midnight Sinicate they provide contemplative and melancholic music for those of us who enjoy RPG...

Lately, it has been Cluster, Popol Vuh, Coil, and Richard Pinhas.

For something new, it has been Motion Sickness of Time Travel
and Black Mountain.

But it changes all the time....

He's a big Lovecraft fan too. Here's a video of him reading 'The Colour out of Space':

Too many to list, really. I go through periods of mostly listening to electronic, folk, classical, postpunk, jazz, etc...

The ones I always come back to include Boards of Canada, Aphex Twin, Joy Division, Kraftwerk, Shirley Collins, Thomas Tallis...

Spiritual Front - 'Nihilist suicide pop'. I think they played a gig with Death In June (another favourite) recently. I also love Current 93, Morrissey, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Townes Van Zandt, Leonard Cohen, Stephin Merritt's bands (The Magnetic Fields, The 6ths, The Gothic Archies) , original line-up The Smashing Pumpkins, Zwan, to name a few others.

Since I've seen no mention of the Australian band Portal herein, I'll recommend them to the black/death metal fans of the forum. Although some may find their song titles to be trying too hard, I think they are very evocative and fit the music well: Abysmills, Awryeon, The Back Wards...

To me they sound like all matter grinding itself to oblivion in a cataclysmic rush for the end.

I also recommend Impetuous Ritual (also from Australia) and Antediluvian and Mitochondrion (both from Canada).

Re: Favorite Bands?

Wumpscut, Big Black, Skinny Puppy, Darkthrone, Lustmord, Bastard Noise, Subhumans, M.B., Whitehouse, Current 93, Mobb Deep, Nas, Meat Beat Manifesto, Dissecting Table...

You should look through Off the radar metal album recommendations - THE NIGHTMARE NETWORK

Portal gets mentioned.

They've become one of my favorite bands. I love Outre' and their last album Vexovoid blew me away.

No one has posted here for a while. Maybe you could post some of your favorite videos.:D

Re: Favorite Bands?

The Residents anyone? It ought to be sufficiently nihilistic, misanthropic, and horrific.

CONSTANTINOPLE

SINISTER EXAGGERATOR

BLUE ROSEBUDS
"Your words are empty hollow bleatings
Of a mental crutch
They're open-festered indigestion
With a velvet touch
An ether-eating Eskimo
Would gag upon your sight
Convulsed into oblivion
From laughter or from fright
A coma with a sweet aroma
Is your only dream
Malignant with the misconception
That a grunt can gleam
Your lichen-covered corpuscles
Are filthy to my fist
Infection is your finest flower
Mildewed in the mist."

LOVE LEAKS OUT - Creepy video.

FINGERTIPS - Decadent images of roses and death. Depressing.

ALMOST PERFECT - Late Residents song, as they had become fully accomplished musicians. Easier listen for the uninitiated.

That's a nice eclectic mix. Especially love Bastard Noise and M.B.. Do you listen to New Blockaders?

Re: Favorite Bands?

I could list bands all night so I'll try to stick to five. First that come to mind are:

Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds
Killing Joke
Joy Division
King Crimson
Morphine

And that's bands only, because artists there's quite a few folk I admire. Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, Jacques Brel, Scott Walker... and, for my money, the two solo albums by Rowland S. Howard are far better than many bands' entire discography.

I really like Tweedles, Freakshow, Commercial Album, and I absolutely love River of Crime and Demons Dance Alone. But me they're kinda like Coil in that their catalog is ridiculously big so I have no hopes of ever hearing it all, and even then I really don't know what to make out of half the stuff I listen to. Sometimes I love it on first listen. Sometimes it grows on me. Sometimes it never does. :(

I agree there on those albums, except Commercial Album which I never listen to (too short tunes for me to get involved). A few other favorites, Mark of the Mole, Diskomo/Goosebump, God in Three Persons (a bit too dark for me), Cube E: Live in Holland, Live At the Fillmore, Disfigured Night.

Lately they have started producing recordings of all their live performances. The most rabid fans love it. But that's when I gave up. I stick with the old stuff.

So many, but those I've listened to the most and the longest would be the Legendary Pink Dots and Nine Inch Nails. Death in June, Joy Division/New Order, Cabaret Voltaire, Beth Orton, Mazzy Star, Massive Attack, Fugazi, Talking Heads, Jimi Hendrix, Tool, Portishead, and Roxy Music would be other lifelong favorites, albeit I listen to them more inconsistently. In the last few years, I've been really keen on Haus Arafna, Rome, Can, Adult., and Florence and the Machine.

That's a great track. I always thought that and "Battle Of Epping Forest" were really gutsy in the way they just barely hang together but pull off something really impressive in the unlikely combination.

Re: Favorite Bands?

I seem a similarity in a few of our favorite bands: Tom Waits and Joy Division.

For me: Godspeed You Black Emperor, King Crimson, A Perfect Circle, Thrice, Manchester Orchestra, Sparklehorse, Radiohead, The Be Good Tanya, Nine Inch Nails, Matryoshka (My Funeral Rehearsal), Mono, Eyedea.

There are others too, but I only like one or two songs from them.

Re: Favorite Bands?

See? This is the problem when I make lists: I always forget someone or something; in this case: Godspeed You Black Emperor, Joy Division, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Sonic Youth, The Cure and The Velvet Underground. Oh, and Arcade Fire, Crystal Stilts, Current 93, Ivy, Saint Vincent and Warpaint.

Re: Favorite Bands?

If I had to name my top ten bands at this point in time I would say (in no order):

Siouxsie & the Banshees, Current 93, Nine Inch Nails, Throbbing Gristle, Madonna, Whitehouse, Lady Gaga, Joy Division, Suzanne Vega, Dead Can Dance

(10 to 20 would probably be Sonic Youth, Pink Floyd, The Residents, Nico, The Velvet Underground, Suicide, Depeche Mode, Cut Hands, Ministry, Emerson, Lake & Palmer)

My top ten albums (again, in no order):

The Holy Bible (Manic Street Preachers)
The Marble Index (Nico)
Imperium (Current 93)
The Wall (Pink Floyd)
Third Reich & Roll (The Residents)
Daydream Nation (Sonic Youth)
Black Celebration (Depeche Mode)
Horse Rotorvator (Coil)
The Downward Spiral (Nine Inch Nails)
Asceticists 2006 (Whitehouse)

Add this women to my list: Alanis Morissette, Fiona Apple, P.J. Harvey, Regina Spektor and Tori Amos; I am sure there are more, but these are the ones I remember right now. Oh, and Air, Death in Vegas, Zero 7 and New Order. And two including one of my favorites guitarists of all time, Kevin Shields: My Bloody Valentine and Le Volume Courbe.
