Re: Ex Occidente Press
I wonder what's up next?

Re: Ex Occidente Press
I pre-ordered the Duffy book, the Samuels book, and the Reggie Oliver book. Dan has not responded to nay emails regarding the Duffy text, nor has my copy of the Samuels book arrived.
This is not looking good to me. |
Re: Ex Occidente Press
From what I understand, Dan is away on vacation until the 11th or the 18th (I'm not sure which Friday), so a response right now is unlikely. I'd suggest not fretting the lack just yet.

Re: Ex Occidente Press
Duffy has said:
"Gary, I was simply suggesting that any issues you may have over the GSS (and I'm not a member, so I don't really feel able to comment here) don't necessarily have any bearing on the matter at hand - namely, Dan Ghetu's inability to honour his promises. "I might as well state for the record at this point that I've today severed all connections with Ex Occidente. Put simply: assurances were made to me that have not been honoured; deadlines were repeatedly broken; issues of legitimate concern ignored or fudged; and the press' proprietor is clearly unable to comport himself in an acceptably businesslike manner. So, good riddance. I can only apologise to anybody who's pre-ordered my collection - the one that Dan Ghetu promised to publish in 2008 - and I would suggest that they contact Ex Occidente immediately concerning a refund." At least Duffy seems to be standing up for the people who have been burned. I ordered "Virtue In Danger", "The Man Who Collected Machen" and the now-canceled Duffy collection. Despite assurances, none of these books have arrived. You don't think I'm mad? |
Re: Ex Occidente Press
I'm not sure if you're asking me that, but you're welcome to feel any way you like. I'm certainly not stopping you. All I'm saying is that if you've emailed Dan while he's been away then the most likely reason you've not had a response is that he's been away.
As for your books, considering only one of the three has seen print, and that one so recently that not all copies have arrived in readers' hands, I'm confused as to what assurances have thus far been proved wrong. But, perhaps it's a matter of semantics, and in fact your concern is the amount of time that has passed since you've placed your pre-orders. A far more legitimate concern, and one there is no argument against. That said, Dan seems to be stepping up production again with his new printer (proof of which is the release of two books in the last month) so I imagine he's hopeful the backlog is cleared soon and everyone who has pre-ordered books either receives them, or, in the case of the two since-cancelled titles, receives their refund/credit. Once he returns from vacation and we see what response he provides regarding these issues to those that have contacted him, we'll have a better understanding of what to expect. I say all this as someone who pre-ordered all these same books and more, and who still is awaiting his copy of Mark Samuels book. |
Re: Ex Occidente Press
He promised to send me books last fall - they never appeared. Then he said that stuff was in the mail and stopped replying. I used another email account to contact him and he issues the same promises. When I inquired about the Duffy book, he said nothing. Now you're telling me he's on vacation. You know, when I go on vacation, I can still answer emails.
When, exactly, am I allowed to be upset? Can you give me a deadline at which, if I have no books and no money back, that you will agree that I have been burned? |
Re: Ex Occidente Press
As I said, feel free to be upset whenever you like. It's irrelevant to me. If you don't feel a person deserves to be away from his or her email while on vacation, then what could I possibly say to change your mind? Please, by all means, be upset. I give you dispensation. And I'm afraid I can offer no deadlines: those are for you alone to judge.

Re: Ex Occidente Press
Let me get this straight. You are a publisher and announce a book by Duffy. You take my money from me for that book. Then the book is canceled, and you remove any mention from it at all from your webpage. But you never send me an email telling me the book I ordered from you isn't going to appear nor do you offer to send me my money back. When I email you about it, you ignore all references to that book. I sent these emails weeks ago.
This is ethical? Wow, I don't know where you are from, but this is not an ethical business practice on the planet I live on. Can you really defend this? |

Personally, (as a business owner) I can say I'd make sure my previous orders are all squared away (or given refunds) before I spent my time putting out further volumes. Secondly, if my business is having problems, and I have a lot of unhappy customers and unanswered emails, I wouldn't go on vacation until it's all sorted out. One wonders if this is a business or a hobby for him. |
