Re: Ex Occidente Press

I received my copy of The Peacock Escritoire here in Washington state last week. I'm still waiting on two older books and, of course, some pre-orders. It does seem like packages are getting through though.

Mine are finally on the way to North Carolina. Dan has to ship orders larger than 2.2kg to the UK to a couple of very reputable booksellers where they are then shipped form the UK to the States.
Seems he's had to do this for Ziesing Books since last year.

Pain in the rear, but if it gets the books here, it's ok with me.

Cheers
Jeff

I received 2 Levant titles shipped on 3/15 last week, though an order placed from an English bookseller before the 15th hasn't made it. Seems any orders crossing the Atlantic are subject to delay.

Received an email from Dan this morning that the Romanian shipping restrictions to the United States had be ended. I have a tracking number for my box and await it's arrival impatiently.

Re: Ex Occidente Press

The latest issue of 'Supernatural Tales' has two stories by ExOccidente authors: Colin Insole - 'Flower of the Sun' and Louis Marvick - 'I Is for Ilinx'.

I was particularly taken by the Marvick tale which I found to be wonderfully grotesque if not even slightly unhinged. In his 'bio' he laments the fact that his EO novel The 'Star' Ushak has apparently sunk without trace (and it is true that I can't find a single review of it online.)

I am not familiar with this author's work at all and I was wondering if anyone has an opinion on this novel before I reach for my wallet. My hesitation being that in my experience this sort of 'high weirdness' doesn't necessarily translate very well to the novel form.

I read The 'Star' Ushak in proof and would recommend it if you like decadent detectives. It's more a novella than a novel so the weirdness does hold out well over the length. If Lord Peter Wimsey had been a Nineties aesthete and rather more wicked he would have fitted in well here. But I'm an Occidental author myself and fond of this form and period, so take that into account too.

I liked Ushak very much. I found its play on the decadent detective conventions both amusing and clever, and the way it sent out a flock of red herrings worked wonderfully for me. It didn't get much attention though, which is a shame. I somehow suspect that there is a very small market for this kind of fiction, however much I enjoyed the book.
