A lot of people held out hope that Street Fighter 4, Splatterhouse 4 and Bloodstained would be proper 2d. Once they go 3d it seems impossible they'll go back unless it's a big phenomenon with multiple versions like Sonic, Mario and Zelda.

I think the main issue is time. The time it taken to animate characters in King Of Fighters 12 & 13 was alarming and it didn't pay off so they switched to 3d for KOF14. Castlevania nearly always had a lot of pixels from previous games.

I heard Owlboy was a flop though, which is strange because it seemed very warmly received.

Well that's honestly not something I was aware of. I had no reason to think building with sprites as opposed to 3D models was terribly comparable in the first place. Still I wasn't aware that sprites were far more labor intensive. Now that I think about it more, I suppose it only makes sense.

I understand your reasons for not liking half of the artists I tend to favor, still here's another whose work I follow who's dedicated an entire folder to potential 2d game art. Hopefully he's successful, his ideas show much promise.

Anyone here knows the game Nongünz? This game have been described as nihilistic. Even if I disagree with this affirmation, there is something odd and special about his faded scenario that is merely perceived through his black and white post-apocalyptic sense of death and replay. It's a roguelite game but it has interesting mechanics portrayed from Idle games.

Samorost series has some really impressive 2d graphics.

Some of these games look pretty good.

Vanillaware (Muramasa, Dragon's Crown, Odinsphere) makes a fair amount of vector based 2d games so I don't know why more developers didn't copy that.

I recommend Doki Doki Literature Club. Play it knowing nothing beforehand. Anything I could say about why it would appeal to Ligotti fans or literary horror connoisseurs would ruin it. Just know it is brilliant.

It's free to play so none of you have any excuse.

Will I finally find a literary waifu through this game?

I finished playing Doki Doki Literature Club the other day. One of the best free game I've ever played. In terms of VN, I also like this pigeon one.

and I've heard good things about Analogue: A Hate Story by Christine Love (it's $10 though).

I'm not much of a gamer, but there is a company called Amanita Design which creates puzzle-adventure games (including the Samorost series mentioned below) in the style of the old school point-and-click adventure games I played a lot of back when they were popular, and anything they put out I'll play. They're coming out with a new game called Chuchel later this month which I'll definitely be checking out.

I have a feeling this has been posted already but I couldn't find it in search engine. Looks fantastic, if they can do this sprite art why can't Bloodstained?

what a marvelous art design. I too was reminded of Darksouls.
I will definitely seek this one out.
