Call me old fashioned and boring, but I prefer Just for a Day and Souvlaki. :drunk:

Souvlaki is certainly a very sexy record to my ears. But hardly as original and challenging as Pygmalion. A criminally underrated work. A stylistic masterpiece! Full of yearning, tenderness and love, which are qualities that are very difficult to express in music without sounding cliché and making the listener cringe, if you ask me.

Yes. Betting your whole goddamn life on one record is a wonderful thing.

Sundog, are you familiar with Bailter Space, the shoegaze band from New Zealand? If not, I think you should give Robot World a listen. The genre has never appealed to me to any great extent, but that record is an absolute gem.

My current record-without-which-life-would-be-even-less-worth-living is Everything and More by Dolly Mixture:

This three-CD set contains every Dolly Mixture release as well as some hitherto unreleased tracks. More than two hours of glorious lo-fi girl-group pop.

Wow! Dolly Mixture! I never would have thought that they would get a mention on the TLO forum! Absolutely one of my most favoritest bands ever. That 3CD set is a total godsend. I had been rabidly collecting all their orginal releases over the years (I've got everything except for their last 7", Remember This), but that set is just what I'd been waiting for.

Sounds like an impressive collection, DD. Sadly, I missed out on the vinyl rerelease of Demonstration Tapes, so all I have is the retrospective. I wish I owned at least some of the originals.

Edit: Corrected for excessive tweeness.

Nurse with Wound or at least their earlier material seems on the same spectrum as a lot of Japanese bands I used to like, like Merzbow, Boredoms, Keiji Haino, Masonna, etc...but at the moment am more into trance + house...!

I joined this forum for the Ligotti discussion but I'm very impressed with everyone's cool/weird music credibility!

I've loved this album since it came out, but over the years it's become an indispensable "die without it" favorite.

Sleeps With Fishes by Pieter Nooten and Michael Brook

Here's Michael Brook's web site listing of the album: Sleeps With The Fishes (1987) Michael Brook & Pieter Nooten | Michael Brook - The Official Website

And a blog (not mine) which expresses similar thoughts to my own about the album form is void: pieter nooten & michael brook: sleeps with the fishes

I have listened to Pink Floyd's The Piper at the Gates of Dawn innumerable times and it never seems to get old. The same with Syd Barrett's solo album, The Madcap Laughs. Pink Floyd was never as good without him.

I also listen to jazz a lot, especially improvisational jazz. This is one of my favorites:

Belbury Poly later surpassed this curiously sinister slice of radiophonic hauntology with albums like The Owl's Map and From An Ancient Star, but I still remember the wonder of the first listening of this one.

music is the one I find least often anymore. nowadays it's just background noise while i read or drive. Everyfour years or so I come across some band I had not listened to previously that I vastly enjoy to the point where it brightens my mood and gets me through some stressful situation. the last music to do this for me were the albums of Cannibal Corpse and Slayer about two years ago, so it will be a while before anything new comes up.

Books still happen once two years or so. American Psycho, Anathem, The Conspiracy Against the Human Race are the three from the past six years.

movies are by far the rarest. I use Netflix movie-rental service as a substitute for any kind of TV service, so I see a LOT of movies, and very rarely come across one that leaves me wondering how I could have lived without it.

The more days go by, the more all kinds of musical expression seem to me merely the foul breath of mankind. Extraterrestrial musick being the exception that confirms the rule.
