Well, the import of the song is pretty much the opposite of that. Still, I suppose "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down," once considered a classic, is now politically incorrect along with so much else.

I used to listen to The Band a lot, way back when. The recent death of Levon Helm has started some old songs running through my head. Richard Manuel sang lead on this one, "Whispering Pines." Richard Manuel hung himself in a hotel room in 1986, if that matters.

Over the last few months, I've been exploring some of the dark ambient genre. I was well primed, then, when I ran across this material: NASA's Voyager space probe recorded the electromagnet signals of several nearby heavenly bodies and published these recordings in several volumes.

The link will take you to Jupiter. Sorry about linking; I had no luck with imbedding. Headphones recommended.

You can get all of them from amazon for $6 (MP3)....pretty killer deal for hours of incredible sound. Sometimes terrifying, sometimes astoundingly beautiful: its everything that listening to a planet ought to be.

The song on my mind today s "Marieke", written by Jacques Brel. I'm thinking about the version performed by Elly Stone in the film "Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris" from 1975.It is very different from most of the songs here so I'm not going to dwonload it here. I saw the original version of "Jacques Brel" in late 1968 with Elly and the original cast and it has stayed with me ever since. The clip is a very touching video about death and the end of love. If anyone is interested they can see it on Youtube.

And that is why is they seem like children...

They are young wild animals...

This is advance warning to all those who hated and an announcement to all those who waited.

Mark Samuels Collection #4 coming from Hieroglyphic Press in 2013. Think again if you thought I'd faded away. I'm not going anywhere. All I'm doing is working at getting better and better at what I do best.

You heard it here first.

Love

One of the few times I recall shedding a tear at a concert was when I went to see Kraftwerk on my own some nine years ago, contemplating this "HALB WESEN UND HALB ÜBERDING" while the bass was pulsating through my body.
