Of course this is the classic version.

I am not sure sex-gimps on the Empire State Building are quite appropriate.

- Thanks to H. Name for introducing me to these guys, former members of Norwegian black metal band who changed into a dream/jangle pop group while retaining the grandiose bleakness of the former; their sound has been called 'suicide twee', and I can't think of a more apt description.

Re: Your favourite song at the moment..

I went onto You-Tube just now to find a song by a band called All About Eve called Flowers in Our Hair, which I used to love back when my hair was on the top of my head rather than on the lower portion of my head. Alas, it proved to be dire. Very grievous.

So I shall post this instead.

A very good song. And it has the benefit of an accompanying photograph of one of my heroes, Jeremy Brett, appearing as Sherlock Holmes.

What's not to like?

I do wish I could take all the Death/Black Metal bands in Scandinavia and elsewhere as seriously as their followers do by virtue of their doing their level best to applaud wild, erm ... free-thinking ... anti-authoritarian, erm ... rebellious and, well ... significant of attention, musical ditties. Alas, I have reached the stage of thinking songs about burning down already empty churches is not heroic but boring.

For those who don't agree, here's some Nanowar anyway. Enjoy!

I do like Stryper though. But I imagine they would be quite likely to eventually be found crucified in a wood outside of Oslo or Stockholm than playing to packed houses in that corner of Europe.

Those extreme metal bands range very widely in politics and beliefs, even coming from opposite directions. Some are very intelligent (I've got a lot of respect for Ihsahn from Emperor and Protector from Summoning), others are not; many of them fairly similar to leftish punk bands (quite a few Death metal bands are basically hippies) and have their younger selves' more extreme views come back to haunt them. You even get some Christian black metal bands.

But really the majority of these bands aren't even as dodgy as Morrissey let alone Boyd Rice and Death In June (don't know if you're into Boyd Rice but I'm sure quite a few forum members are). Although a few of the main black metal bands are unrepentant extremists, the majority are not.

Oddly enough several years ago the frontwoman of All About Eve said she didn't think that All About Eve's music was very good, so she was relieved that she hadn't stopped doing something important. I've meant to listen to them for years but I'm not in a hurry.

In memory of our first meeting, above a pub in 1992, for your first book, which I asked you to sign.

I still miss you my dear friend. You liked this song.

I'm sure you're right. I am flattered that you think my silly barbs worthy of attention. I am giving out the wrong impression I fear. Believe me, I am never entirely serious on a thread devoted to musical suggestions. Well, my last post aside. That was actually quite heartfelt. Don't let on.

But I thank you.

Here's another song:

Trying to find a song I liked in the '90s. Can't quite remember band name or song title or melody or lyrics! I think it might be something by Sugar--still haven't figured it out, but I did find these good songs:

I don't know what it is about Iggy Pop's album Party, but I'm completely obsessed about it right now. I guess I have a weakness for people who at some stage in their career try so hard to sell out, but are completely incapable of doing that.

I like old music from dead times gone forever. Classical music is lovely, but I get a melancholic frisson from experiencing aged music that society can't really produce anymore due to shifting sands of agreed expectations.

It's our little penthouse, we call it our own,
It's got lots of features, a gold plated phone
And it's all that we've got to lower the tone
At five o'clock in the morning.

Aka one of the few Tiger Lillies songs with the vague meaning.

That Moby is used very effectively in Southland Tales, which is one of my favourite modern films.

I think this is beautiful.

Here I go out to sea again
The sunshine fills my hair
And dreams hang in the air
Gulls in the sky and in my blue eyes
You know it feels unfair
There's magic everywhere
Look at me standing
Here on my own again
Up straight in the sunshine
No need to run and hide
It's a wonderful, wonderful life
No need to laugh and cry
It's a wonderful, wonderful life
Sun's in your eyes the heat is in your hair
They seem to hate you
Because you're there
And I need a friend, oh, I need a friend
To make me happy
Not stand here on my own
Look at me standing
Here on my own again
Up straight in the sunshine
No need to run and hide
It's a wonderful, wonderful life
No need to laugh and cry
It's a wonderful, wonderful life
I need a friend, oh, I need friend
To make me happy
Not so alone
Look at me here
Here on my own again
Up straight in the sunshine
No need to run and hide
It's a wonderful, wonderful life
No need to hide and cry
It's a wonderful, wonderful life
No need to run and hide
It's a wonderful, wonderful life
No need to run and hide
It's a wonderful, wonderful life
Wonderful life
It's a wonderful life
