I always loved the interaction between those really dry, huge sounding 70's drum tones and warm airiness of vintage tape delays on slightly overdriven guitars. I've never heard of Monophonics before now but they capture that vibe really well. Nice stuff.

He can't sing well, his political views are half-baked, but he has a pop sensibility that all good songwriters must have, from Dylan to Waits. He ain't on their level but it's a good album. Levi Stubbs' Tears indeed.
