The Saddest Music in the World
 

Ever since viewing Guy Maddin's film 'The Saddest Music in the World' some years back, a topic that has periodically intrigued me is the compilation of the world's genuinely saddest, most melancholy, and heartbreaking songs. What better place to start such a list than here at TLO? I will kick things off with with an assortment of my own picks , but would invite all to contribute their own suggestions of music deserving to be recognized as the saddest ever!

An interesting list, I think I may have read it years ago, but neither that list nor this one will contain my pick for what is perhaps the saddest song I have ever heard, as I have never found a recording. It is the theme to Fassbinder's 'Ali: Fear Eats the Soul' from composer Peer Raben - 'Das Kleine Lieben' or 'Little Love', which plays throughout the film, most notably during the closing scene. The song is only available in a reworked version from another Fassbinder score, and is moving, but lacks the simple majesty of the original:

I'm not sure about the saddest music, and yes it is personal, the worst song about me that I've heard is The Sound of Madness, they say I need a shot gun blast a kick in the ass no one owes you anything, my reply back to no one owes me anything is if I could sue you then you owe me, how about a meal or a job, can only say no wonder in Isaiah it says tell the daughter of Zion her reward is with Me, thank you Lord Jesus I know my reward is with you . I like the song Lies of the Beautiful People, you would think people would get that song, when I tell them it is about me and what some people were doing . Miss Murder by AFI, and it is shocking when you know the story behind it, they are calling me miss murder because I turned a bugged phone off, bad and I guess sad .
