Right, contemporary indie really is the saddest music in the world.

Re: The Saddest Music in the World

Well, this list is by no means definitive; sadness and musical taste both are highly subjective by nature, so what gets posted here is a matter of preference. While I have tried to select a diversity of songs by the likes Philip Glass, Ennio Morricone, Laurie Anderson and Johnny Cash, but just as some prefer neo-folk, black metal, or whathaveyou, the genres of music I enjoy most tend to be grouped under the rubric 'indie'. These are only my selections, as this list should be a exhibition for sad, mournful music of every variety; such as this:

I don't know, for some reason this feels appropriate. . .

Re: The Saddest Music in the World

I'm pretty far from a fan of 80's synth/club music; however, this song is the exception. In the years prior to facebook, I had penpals on Soulseek, one of whom sent me this song; he lived in the boondocks of Iowa or someplace in the midwest equally forsaken, and was in the process of coming out to his family and friends. This song reminds me of his experiences, and few have captured better what it means to be an outsider, an exile; I hope it all turned out all right for him.
