Nick Drake
I know he's been mentioned before, but he needs his own thread. If I were a musician and not just some sorry writer I'd want to be Nick Drake.
Once, when I was staying in Mexico I was playing his stuff on a laptop while writing and a musician friend in whose house I was staying, and who was part of a very famous band over there, stopped what he was doing in the background and demanded to know who he was. I never realised, he said, the English had souls ... Mark S. |

I'm particularly fond of this one.

Re: Nick Drake
I remember hearing "Pink Moon" while very stoned and getting the sense of something ominous. I'm not one bit surprised or ambivalent that Nick Drake killed himself on purpose. He couldn't even look anyone in the eye.

Re: Nick Drake
I was working in Our Price in the mid 90s when I first heard Nick Drake, my manager put one of his albums on to listen to while we were putting the stock out. I seem to remember only hearing one or two songs and bought all his albums straight away:

Re: Nick Drake
Drake influenced many musicians, one of them just happens to be one of my favorite bands - Boris... So, try this :
Cover is, obviously, homage to Bryter Layter... |
Re: Nick Drake
I've just got the cheap(er) version of this book.
https://www.rememberedforawhile.com/ Haven't had time to dig into it yet but it looks magnificent, with loads of family photos, diaries, photos etc. It also makes me think that there would be a market for a lavishly illustrated book about his gorgeous sister Gabrielle, star of UFO. |
Re: Nick Drake
A few years ago Ray Russell and I, on the way to a Machen weekend, stopped at Tanworth-in-Arden to pay our respects at Nick Drake's grave, and to pass by his house, in a quiet lane. Beyond the house the road reaches a gate and a path across fields, where we imagined he must often have walked. The Warwickshire village still has a genteel pastoral quality that must have permeated his music. You half-expected to see his lanky, long-haired figure, carrying a guitar loosely over his shoulder, disappearing beneath the trees.

This fingerpicking version of Place To Be is a beauty:

(Perhaps this should go in the "your favourite song at the moment" thread instead?)
