Re: Who Are You?
I don't know if I've ever posted to this either, so here goes:
I grew up in a small community called Mosherville, in Nova Scotia, which is on the east coast of Canada. When I moved to Halifax when I was 19, I left behind basically thirteen people in the community. I worked for 18 years for a trust company until they roped me and dragged me to the back door saying my job was redundant, and frankly, I was as well. I've been married six times. No. That's a lie. I've never been married nor do I have kids--and that suits me just fine. If I ever want something to love I'll get myself a dog. I enjoy reading, writing, collecting autographs and handwritten letters. I have quite the collection in a big trunk in my bedroom. The strange thing is that only one earthling has ever read more than four of the letters that I've received. (I've of course read them all myself.) I keep them in plastic, sealed, and I treasure them very much. My favorite letter came from a 100 year old woman from Cape Breton, Canada. She sent me a letter post-marking it a few years in the future. Hey, if I live to be 100, I should be able to do anything I want as well. I smoked once, a pack a day. That habit has not been a part of my life for eight years. My pocket book thanks me, or perhaps my belly as smoking is so expensive in Canada. I've never outgrown my imagination. I am sure when I'm 80, I'll still take life with a grain of salt. I'm an addict--to tea. Enough. |
Re: Who Are You?
I'm Alec Smith
I am 43 years old, enjoying mid-life wisdom and security. I work as an executive assistant to the corporate controller of a medical device firm in Santa Ana. My dream and current goal is to make my living as a writer. I've been writing since I was fourteen, but only seriously for the last six years. I'm finally feeling like I'm getting some talent and experience in my writing and I am preparing seven stories for the publication rounds. I'm also a musician that plays mainly guitar and mandolin, but dabbles in percussion, bass and keyboards. I also produce and engineer my own music and the music for my band(s). Bands I play in are two acoustic guitar rockin jam music (Grateful Dead first sets from the late sixties). Married for 18 years to the same woman - no kids (thank GOD) and no plans to have any (Vasectomies are da BOMB). Ulysees by James Joyce is my all-time favorite book, with Delany's Dhalgren a close second. I'm endlessly fascinated by the short stories of Ramsey Campbell, John Shirley, Clive Barker (B of B), T. Ligotti, Q.Crisp, M. Samuels and DF Lewis. I also enjoy the labyrinthine writing of Thomas Mann. Life is good! alec... |
wow...I'm 18 now and still haven't changed
hooray for stagnancy! |

Doot doot doot…
My name is Toebe for simplicities sake. I enjoy reading, writing, short walks on the concrete. The authors that I like include: George Orwell. D. Harlan Wilson, Irvine Welsh, H.G Wells, William Gibson, H.P. Lovecraft, Arthur C. Clark, Kurt Vonnegut, William S. Burroughs, Chuck Palahniuk, Aldous Huxeley, Douglass Adams, Neil Gaiman, Cory Doctorow, Ray Bradbury, Guy de Maupassant, Joseph Heller, Joseph Conrad, Jules Verne, Franz Kafka, Thomas Ligotti, Bret Easton Ellis, Roald Dahl, Philip K. Dick, Oscar Wilde, Albert Camus, Haruki Murakami, Paul auster…etc but I'm open to almost anything…. I was introduced to this site by one Mr. Koger. He introduces a lot of unhealthy reading and website viewing. Just ask if there’s any questions. hooray for stagnancy.... |

Ambivalent, welcome to TLO! I hope your stay is a pleasant one! I just chatted with Mr. Koger and a few others in the Bungalow House. Your benefactor/sponsor/bad influence is good fun, indeed! It must be quite an experience to know Mr. K. personally. As for the rest of us, much remains unknown....

Other tidbits on me: -I'm in the process of writing a series of stories which I intend to be published through the Red Tower. -I'm a weird music fanatic. I own several samples of unusual or rare vinyl, such as a copy of IHASPFTW, an original pressing of Never Mind the Bollocks Here's the Sex Pistols, promo versions of Swans' Holy Money and Time is Money (Bastard), and the Decemberists' Sixteen Military Wives 7", imported from the UK for less in toto than I would from my own country, the US(SR?). -I am studying French, Basque, and German. -Thought of the day: Iraq is better off with crazed despots ruling it than we so-called "liberators". Without vile, controlling people of secular inclination in power there, even more vile people of religious leanings start killing each other. |
Ambivalent, welcome aboard! We have lots of fun here. If I have missed saying welcome to anyone please forgive me. Welcome to All!!

hooray! the board is back up
and yes, phil, knowing me in real life is quite the experience/chore |

Welcome, Ambivalent. Hope you enjoy TLO as much as I do!

Re: Who Are You?
Hello. My real name is Rover. I was born in Sweden in 1999. I currently live in Michigan in the United States of America. In 2005, I was rescued by G. S. Carnivals in an international animal recovery effort which endeavored to find new homes for wretched creatures who were bereft. I had accompanied a Swedish expedition to Antarctica, of which only three humans (out of twenty-eight) and two dogs (out of seventeen) survived. I choose not to think or speak of this ever again, if possible. Forgive my pain. G. S. has allowed me access to his library as long as I don’t drool too much. I am an avid fan of the writings of Franz Kafka, Philip K. Dick, Jack Vance, and Thomas Ligotti.. Where music is concerned, I am a real freak over David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and thrashing punk bands of the late 1970s and early 1980s. I have been known to doodle with a band here and there myself. Roads girdle the globe, and I wish to trot upon them as I enjoy world travel (though not as much recently since I am no longer allowed to stick my head out of the window on commercial flights). I hope to make a useful contribution here at TLO from time to time. [And thanks for the welcome from the anonymous Guest via PM. (You know who you are, whoever you are.)]

Re: Who Are You?
Hi folks! My name is Love Kassius and I'm from Sweden. I enjoy, reading, writing, movies and philosophy. I admire Ligotti's work and thus this place seems fitting for me.
Cheers. |
Re: Who Are You?
Welcome to The Navidson Record! Two true confessions in a row from Swedish members. Consider the odds. Now if I could only work out an angle to win the lottery...

Re: Who Are You?
Welcome, Navidson! Always good to have another MZD and TL fan on (the) board.

Re: Who Are You?
This is amazing! I found out about Ligotti only a few minutes ago after his site and latest essay were mentioned in the "Whispers of the Ghooric Zone" web log, and I can't help but be incredibly happy with the similarities between my interests and those of Ligotti and many readers who post in this site!
For example, I also listen to many of the musical works mentioned by the most recent posters, especially Romantic and Baroque classical music, New Wave (such as those mentioned in one section of the forums), and punk. I also read works by Borges, Lovecraft, Poe, Shelley, Burroughs, and a lot more (on account of my previous work, which was teaching Western lit in uni, including Dante, Shakespeare, Nabokov, Conrad, Mann, Woolf, Kafka, and Goethe), as well as various works from philosophy, religion, and the social sciences, such as Nietzsche and C.S. Lewis. I also enjoy academic classical art, especially those displayed by Art Renewal, as well as Renaissance, Medieval, and Romanesque works. I have a dark view of the world, enjoy post-apocalyptic media and horror (including games like the Fallout series and Call of Cthulhu, art films like those by Bela Tarr and works like The Seventh Seal, and so on). It looks like I will have to do a lot of catching up, though, because I have never read Ligotti. Ligotti's work described as "philosophical horror"? Two of my favorite words! |
Re: Who Are You?
I made too much words on this one...
Let's just jave a few. I'm an Austrian having lived the last few years in Berlin & now looking for another place to emigrate. One of my favourite stories of all time is Ligotti's "Purity". It's perfect. |
Re: Who Are You?
Hello there.
My name is Mads, I study litterature and modern culture on the University of Copenhagen. I'm 23 years old, and hate the feeling of growing older. I got into Ligotti through Current 93, which remains my favourite orchestra. During the summer, I'm supposed to be writing my BA thesis about Ligotti's fiction. However, being quite lazy, it will probalby last until next year. |
Re: Who Are You?
hello-my name is patrick mullins.this is the first and possibly only one of these online groups i've joined, ever. i'm 33 years old, am currently in self-imposed exile in kentucky, usa. came her from san francisco, plan to go back soon. have been a ligotti fan for years, since finding songs of a dead dreamer in a used bookshop. also enjoy q. crisp, terry lamsley, the classics (both jameses, poe, machen, machen, machen, lovecraft). attempts at writing my own fiction are negligible. spent time in a lot of bay area bands. currently recovering from a small-scale nervous breakdown. nice to be here, on this board, with likeminded folks.
cheers. |
Re: Who Are You?
Hi! I found this thread while looking for some Stefan Grabinski's... so I thought I'd drop a few lines as well ... My name is Lisa, I'm 26 years old and at the moment i live in Italy...I spent some time in Berlin studying philosophy...then came back, graduated and started working for a publishing house. It's all about philosohy..I'm doing a Phd, but I'm seriously thinking about dropping...I'm really disappointed by university.
Philosophy is just too rational, I need a way out: horror/weird fiction is my way out. Music is my way out. (My attempts in literature and music, of course, are going nowhere!). I'm planning to move to Tokyo next year. Let's see what happens... I really like this group and I'm happy I joined! Lisa |

wow...a lot of new people on board. welcome to all of you!

Re: Who Are You?
DF Lewis wrote: Horror/weird fiction is the only way in to philosophy, I find.
In some way it is...academic philosophy is something else, since it is ruled by the so called scientific method...and that's what I mean when I say it's too rational for me! ...but I guess this could be a challenging topic to discuss! - thank you Mister Unknown!- |
Re: Who Are You?
"Who are you?"
"Myself. Can you say the same?" (An exchange from somewhere in Peer Gynt, as I remember it. There is not much to say about me, really.) |
Re: Who Are You?
Welcome, Viva June. A most appropriate introduction.
|
Re: Who Are You?
This is a thoroughly un-Ligottian forum thread!
"You have failed your art, you have failed yourself, and you have failed me. If your artworks had really evoked the bleakness of things, then I would not have felt this need to know who you are, this killing sadness that there was actually someone who experienced the same sensations and mental states that I did and who could share them with me in the form of tape-recorded dream monologues. Who are you.." |
Re: Who Are You?
I love the hilarious irony in your post Bleak and Icy! Thanks for giving me a good laugh on this wet afternoon.

Re: Who Are You?
My name is Adele and i've been lurking for quite sometime. I'm not sure what to say about myself ,so i'll just say that i've been a Ligotti fan for a few years now. My favorite story of his being My Work Is Not Yet Done. I am a devoted reader and also love Suskind's The Perfume, Miracle of the Rose by Genet and pretty much anything by Oscar Wilde.

Still silent till now... I'm an inveterate lurker and my english is far from fluent.
Nothing of real interest to say on me. I'm from Genoa, Italy: sometimes illustrator or sculptor, sometimes writing bad articles on web and non-professional italian magazines, sometimes none of this... and even neither too on this same planet! All the best from this world and the others, Andrea |

A rather belated welcome to our "new" members Andrea Bonazzi and Odalisque.
I just realized no one has greeted Andrea and Peter till now so I just wanted to take the opportunity and do so. :p |
Re: Who Are You?
There is no real me: only an entity, something illusory. And though I can hide my cold gaze, and you can shake my hand and feel flesh gripping yours and maybe you can even sense our lifestyles are probably comparable...I simply am not there.
