Re: Ligotti Given Short Shrift on "The All-Time Greatest Horror Writers"?
I've recently grown exponentially annoyed at "Best Of" lists that really are marketing strategies. I know I should know better but like Charlie Brown kicking the football I keep hoping. And where I get caught is that the first few are legitimate. So like "Top 50 Best Sci-Fi Novels of All Time". Starts off with "Childhood's End" then goes to "Do Androids Dream of Electronic Sheep?" then to "War of the Worlds" then . . . wait a f*#kin second, what the f*#k is "The Maze Runner" doing on the same list as "Neuromancer"??? And at that point I'm in mid-air realizing the football was pulled away.

Re: Ligotti Given Short Shrift on "The All-Time Greatest Horror Writers"?
Ligotti has shot up the rankings in the OP's poll since this thread was made and was at number 21 last time I looked. Not bad for a man with zero pop culture visibility outside of being one of a poseur showrunner's hidden influences.
Clark Ashton Smith is even higher, which is a nice surprise. Though I rate him as one of the greatest fantasy writers, his horror tales could be very traditional, with the exceptions of obvious classics such as The Vaults of Yoh-Vombis or Genius Loci. Smith is more underrated than Ligotti these days, I find. Even I didn't quite fall under his spell until this year. |
