The Nightmare Network – story

Just finished it and really enjoyed it.

I see it as a very special take on ‘Nethescurial’ (or anima mundi, or the ten thousand things) as it seems to show a proper ending of ‘this shadow, this darkness’ continuity.
It shows a future where ‘this shadow, this darkness’ that basically makes up our world has run out of that which it needs to thrive upon and thus thrives upon itself until it is all consumed and the universe lay still and quiet .

I thought this was a very fitting ending.

Re: The Nightmare Network – story

Finally - a Ligotti story I actually have!

The Nightmare Network is one of my favourite Ligotti tales I've came across. I have never encountered a piece of fiction written in quite the same way before or since.

I like your view in connection with the Nethescurial aspect. This isn't my my own view but I think it could be read as a more of an internal thing – a sort of psychic conspiracy and collapse in the human mind. (sorry if that sounded horribley pretentius)

Re: The Nightmare Network – story

I think all of his stories are connected to an extant on account of how so many of his protagonists have tapped into ‘this shadow, this darkness’, and how similar their phrases and experiences and are within ‘this shadow’.
I believe every story takes place in the Ligottian universe - that is just a front for the utter blackness that is Nethescurial (my personal favorite of its many names).

Not to mention how many other stories reference each other, how many times has a Red Tower type reference popped up, such as the marketing strategy from ‘My Work Is Not Yet Done’
‘…, there stood a single, shining, windowless structure with no entrance and no exits’

‘ …no comprehension of the nature or purpose of the shining, windowless structure.’

There are others too.

Now that I have MWINYD in my hands back to ‘shadow’ I found a gem in ‘the nightmare network ‘ – “Our names are unknown and our faces are shadows drifting across an infinite blackness.”

‘a Ligotti story I actually have’
I know what you mean pal, I live in Canada, and don’t shop online.
Ligotti is a rarity.

Re: The Nightmare Network – story

I detect the ghost of William Burroughs at Ligotti's elbow in The Nightmare Network. Am I alone in this? Or anybody else think so too.

Re: The Nightmare Network – story

I have looked through all my Thomas Ligotti books and have yet to find "The Nightmare Network" (sadly). Could someone please tell me which book it is in? I realize I am showing my ignorance here. I would be most appreciative.

I read it in http://www.amazon.com/My-Work-Not-Y...=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1248367216&sr=8-1 (Virgin Books, 2009). Not sure if it has appeared elsewhere. It is indeed a fairly abstract story... A little confusing for us slower-witted folks, but I think I was able to wrap my head around it, and I enjoyed it.
