Re: Top 5 Pessimistic Movies

Salò is a terrifying experience; for some reason, it reminded me of L'Age d'Or by Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí, who also collaborated in Un Chien Andalou.

Your fall should be like the fall of mountains. But I was before mountains. I was in the beginning, and shall be forever. The first and the last. The world come full circle. I am not the wheel. I am the hand that turns the wheel. I am Time, the Destroyer. I was the wind and the stars before this. Before planets. Before heaven and hell. And when all is done, I will be wind again, to blow this world as dust back into endless space. To me the coming and going of Man is as nothing.

Salo and Cannibal Holocaust, fine choices.

A couple of superpowered hope-killers:

Re: Top 5 Pessimistic Movies

I think 'Threads' is probably the scariest film I have ever seen, and it isn't even a horror film.

It was much better than the American counterpart, "The Day After."

I seem to recall that there is a video on YouTube contrasting 'Threads' and 'The Day After'. If memory serves, 'Threads' wins out in every criteria applied to the two films.

It turns out that the truly terrifying thing about Threads was that the nuclear holocaust was precipitated by an orange reality TV star threatening military action on Twitter.

Re: Top 5 Pessimistic Movies

Bloody Google Images. This is the other movie I meant:

Testament (1983) - IMDb

Threads is great, for sure, and leaves The Day After in the (deadly radioactive) dust. But Testament is another US production from that era that I think Trumps both of them, in terms of lingering emotional impact.

Threads is more viscerally disturbing, Testament more insidious in effect. One is a series of blunt-force blows to the head, the other slashes with a razor so sharp you don't notice the pain until you've bled half to death. Pick your poison.

Cronenberg's THE FLY, body horror at its peak. The ending could be a lens to see the Conspiracy against the human race.
