The Southern Reach Trilogy

There is a new S.T. Joshi blog post about Jeff VanderMeer and the Southern Reach trilogy:

Jeff VanderMeer: An Aesthetic Catastrophe

I am interested in reading it, but I am having trouble to find the time to do so.

I will definitely watch the movie, though.

Your fall should be like the fall of mountains. But I was before mountains. I was in the beginning, and shall be forever. The first and the last. The world come full circle. I am not the wheel. I am the hand that turns the wheel. I am Time, the Destroyer. I was the wind and the stars before this. Before planets. Before heaven and hell. And when all is done, I will be wind again, to blow this world as dust back into endless space. To me the coming and going of Man is as nothing.

Re: The Southern Reach Trilogy

Tried reading the first one (Annihilation) a few years back and couldn't even bring myself to finish the first chapter, just found it very bland/boring/uninspired. But I guess a lot of people like it so to each their own...

Re: The Southern Reach Trilogy

I found myself a fan of the book when I reviewed it in 2014.
What has intrigued me is that, recently at least, STJ has chosen people to review, not books and also chosen works that he feels instinctively negative about. I choose to buy and review books about which I feel instinctively positive. Neither method is necessarily damnable or good, just different.

Re: The Southern Reach Trilogy

I read the trilogy, thought it was fun. With some of these recent essays, I have to wonder whether Joshi is wasting his time on works that aren't intended to be anything more than that.

“Is it more probable that nature should go out of her course or that a man should tell a lie? We have never seen, in our time, nature go out of her course. But we have good reason to believe that millions of lies have been told in the same time. It is therefore at least millions to one that the reporter of a miracle tells a lie.” – Thomas Paine

Re: The Southern Reach Trilogy

Not really a Vandermeer fan. Always found his writing a little long winded and uninteresting with few exceptions.
That seemed like an obvious slap in the face to Joshi, so I'm not surprised that he responded in kind.

I cannot wait to watch the movie, though. Alex Garland rocks.

I have read Southern Reach and did not dislike it but strongly recommend watching
