Night of the Eagle

Watched this again a few months ago after reading Conjure Wife and wanting to compare the film to its source material. Great film. Peter Wyngarde oozes desperation when his wife is put under the spell. And the eagle effects are surprisingly effective -- probably helps that the film's in black and white.

Funnily enough the first time I watched it I took it for granted that the withcraft and spells were actually supposed to be happening but on this viewing I found myself wondering if it was all down to suggestion and coincidence. Either way it's a great horror film.

If I hadn't already known it was him I would never have recognised him. I always think of him as Jason King. Which is a bit odd seeing as I've never actually watched either that or Department S.

I found Night of the Eagle very effective in leaving the viewer uncertain as to whether or not any witchcraft actually takes place in the film. Definitely one of my favorite Peter Wyngarde performances along with The Innocents and The Avengers episode A Touch of Brimstone. I would really like to see the film receive a DVD release in the U.S., but my Region 2 edition will suffice for now.
