If we're talking obscure as in mainstream recognition, my go-to will always be SKULLFLOWER. An evolving sound over the last 25 or 30 years, but never approaching anything that could be considered normal. (OK, maybe "Transformer," but that is an outlier.)

"Vocal Exploration" is pretty much the only way I can define this project. Wraiths are a local band composed of two mysterious individuals named Nakir and Gaendaal, who dress themselves as black flagellants, and have many divisions. Their music is macabre and unearthly and conjures up in me visions of blackness and desolation and decay. They also seem to be devotees of Clark Ashton Smith; and are two excellent necromancers of ambient music.

Anything on Galakthorroe - Haus Arafna being the most well-known. I'm not even sure if the bands are actually separate people or just different projects of Mrs. & Mr. Arafna....
